64: Why Midlife Feels Like a Season Change

Mornings got harder. Afternoons got heavier. Bedtime started feeling like a lifetime away, even on nights with nowhere to be. Nothing about my schedule had changed, so I went looking for the reason, the way 40 years in clinical pharmacy trained me to. There wasn't one. There was a season, and it turns out seasons have a hormone schedule of their own.

This episode is for anyone who's been told, by a doctor, a friend, or their own inner voice, that this is just what getting older feels like. It isn't. It's a light-driven shift in cortisol and melatonin timing that runs on the actual calendar every September, and at our age it lands harder because of one specific reason your twenty-five-year-old self never had to deal with.

In this episode you'll learn:

  • Why the same seasonal shift that barely touched you at 25 can knock you flat now, and what estrogen actually has to do with it

  • The two-move fix that starts working before you finish this episode: where to put your attention in the morning, and what to protect in the evening

  • Why "vague tiredness" isn't a real diagnosis, and how to tell the difference between a signal and decline

  • The Japanese idea (mono no aware) that reframes a season change as a turn, not a failure

  • Why movement is a second, independent way to reset your body's internal clock, separate from light

There's a coincidence at the center of this one. September 22nd was my last full day of clinical pharmacy work after 40 years. It also happens to be the actual autumn equinox this year. One turning I chose. One turning nobody chooses. I didn't plan for those two to land in the same week, and it's the reason I finally sat down and worked out what was actually happening in my body while it was happening in the sky.
