What turns a promising business connection into a relationship strong enough to support referrals, opportunities, and meaningful collaboration? Susan Jarema introduces the ASCEND Collaboration Ladder as a practical way to recognize where a professional relationship stands and what its next natural step might be.
Moving from authentic connection through trust, referral readiness, shared opportunities, collaboration, and deeper partnership, Susan shows why strong relationships rarely need to be rushed. The focus stays on curiosity, value alignment, follow-through, and Grand Giving rather than transactional networking or keeping score. The ASCEND framework also reinforces an important idea within the GRAND Growth Model: meaningful growth does not always require meeting more people. Sometimes greater opportunity comes from strengthening the relationships already present, opening doors where genuine alignment exists, and allowing collaboration to develop at a pace that supports trust.
What You’ll Hear:
- Strong collaboration often develops through a series of natural relationship steps rather than beginning with a large proposal or immediate business opportunity.
- Authentic connection creates space for curiosity before either person needs to decide what a business relationship should become.
- Trust grows through alignment, consistency, shared values, and the experience of seeing how another person follows through.
- Referral readiness depends on more than being known and trusted. Clear understanding of expertise, ideal clients, problems solved, and credible results makes meaningful introductions easier.
- Opportunities can extend far beyond client referrals, including introductions, speaking opportunities, podcast appearances, shared content, and connections to valuable resources.
- Grand Giving becomes practical when relationships create genuine opportunities to open doors for one another without keeping score.
- Small collaborative experiments can reveal compatibility, communication style, reliability, and audience alignment before a larger partnership is considered.
- Deepening a partnership can be just as valuable as continually seeking new connections, especially when an existing collaboration already works well.
- Not every relationship needs to reach every level of ASCEND. Different connections can remain valuable as referral partnerships, trusted resources, speaking relationships, or supportive professional connections.
- Sustainable relationship-based growth comes from recognizing where a connection currently belongs and choosing the next appropriate step rather than forcing momentum.

Susan Jarema:with us, and be part of something grand.
Susan Jarema:Welcome to the Grand Connection podcast, where we explore how
Susan Jarema:entrepreneurs can grow through meaningful connections, grand
Susan Jarema:giving, and collaboration. I'm Susan Jarima, co-founder of the
Susan Jarema:Grand Connection. In episode 39, we explored what it means to be
Susan Jarema:R-ready or referral-ready, because even when people know,
Susan Jarema:like, and trust us, they can't refer us if they don't clearly
Susan Jarema:understand who we help, the value we provide, and when to
Susan Jarema:think of us. But being referral ready is only part of the
Susan Jarema:journey. What happens after we make a connection? How does
Susan Jarema:someone move from being a person we met at a networking event to
Susan Jarema:someone we trust, refer, collaborate with, or perhaps
Susan Jarema:even build something with? That's where the Ascend
Susan Jarema:collaboration ladder comes in. Today, we're going to walk
Susan Jarema:through the stages of Ascend and look at how relationships can
Susan Jarema:naturally grow from a first connection into referrals,
Susan Jarema:opportunities, and deeper collaborations, and most
Susan Jarema:importantly, I'll give you a simple action you can take with
Susan Jarema:you today to work on the relationships already in your
Susan Jarema:network. So let's get going. Have you ever met someone at a
Susan Jarema:networking event and thought, "This is a great person. We
Susan Jarema:should collaborate, but collaborate on what? It might
Susan Jarema:not come to you right away, or perhaps you've had someone you
Susan Jarema:just met immediately ask you for a referral, or ask for an
Susan Jarema:introduction, or even suggest creating and doing something
Susan Jarema:together. And sometimes it's just too soon.
Susan Jarema:One of the things I've learned through the years of networking
Susan Jarema:and building the grand connection is that the strong
Susan Jarema:collaborations rarely begin with a big proposal, right? You're
Susan Jarema:not going to get married on the first date. You've heard that
Susan Jarema:before. They grow through relationships, and that's what
Susan Jarema:the Ascend collaboration ladder is designed to help us
Susan Jarema:understand, are ready referral ready asks, am I clear,
Susan Jarema:credible, and prepared enough that someone can confidently
Susan Jarema:refer me? Ascend asks, where is this relationship right now, and
Susan Jarema:what is the next natural step? They both need to be aligned,
Susan Jarema:right? Because not every connection is ready for a
Susan Jarema:referral, and not every referral relationship is ready for a
Susan Jarema:collaboration. So it's time to climb the ladder. A is the first
Susan Jarema:in our in our acronym because you know I love acronyms, and A
Susan Jarema:stands for authentic connection. Everything begins with an
Susan Jarema:authentic connection. Maybe you met someone at a grand
Susan Jarema:connection event in a breakout room through LinkedIn. Maybe it
Susan Jarema:was at a conference. Maybe you met them on a podcast or through
Susan Jarema:an introduction. At this stage, you don't need to figure out how
Susan Jarema:you're going to do business together. This is the time to
Susan Jarema:get curious. Let's say I meet a leadership coach at a grand
Susan Jarema:mixer.
Susan Jarema:We have a great conversation and discover that we both work with
Susan Jarema:entrepreneurs and business leaders. That's interesting, but
Susan Jarema:I don't know enough about this person yet to introduce them to
Susan Jarema:someone I care about. So the next step might simply be, would
Susan Jarema:you like to have a one-on-one and learn a little more about
Susan Jarema:each other? That's it. We don't need to climb the whole ladder
Susan Jarema:in one conversation. S stands for strengthen, trust, and
Susan Jarema:alignment. This is where that one-on-one conversation becomes
Susan Jarema:so valuable. What do they really do? Who do they serve? What do
Susan Jarema:they value? What are they trying to create? How do they show up?
Susan Jarema:Do they follow through? And importantly, is there enough
Susan Jarema:alignment to continue developing the relationship further?
Susan Jarema:Perhaps that leadership coach and I are having our one-on-one
Susan Jarema:and discover that we both believe strongly in
Susan Jarema:relationship-based business rather than high-pressure
Susan Jarema:selling. I mean, that's a lot of people in our community. There's
Susan Jarema:value alignment right away, and maybe I go and I attend one of
Susan Jarema:their workshops. Maybe they come to one of my events. We stay in
Susan Jarema:touch. Little by little, trust develops.
Susan Jarema:Notice that nothing has been sold. C stands for create
Susan Jarema:referral readiness. This is where our R ready referral ready
Susan Jarema:work connects directly with Ascend. I might really like you.
Susan Jarema:I might trust you. I might genuinely want to help you, and
Susan Jarema:this happens a lot of the time, but that doesn't necessarily
Susan Jarema:mean I know how to refer you. I can't tell you how many times
Susan Jarema:I've heard someone say, "Oh, she's really great. You should
Susan Jarema:talk to her. And then I ask, "Well, what does she do? Well,
Susan Jarema:I'm not quite sure. Go talk to her yourself, or they know what
Susan Jarema:she does, but they don't know who really needs her. That's a
Susan Jarema:referral-ready problem. Before I can confidently introduce that
Susan Jarema:leadership coach, I need to understand who specifically do
Susan Jarema:they help. What is usually happening when someone needs
Susan Jarema:them? What problem do they solve? What results are they
Susan Jarema:helping people work towards what evidence gives me confidence in
Susan Jarema:recommending them, and what should I actually say when I
Susan Jarema:make the introduction? This is why clarity and credibility
Susan Jarema:matter so much.
Susan Jarema:Already helps you become easier to refer. Ascend the ascend
Susan Jarema:ladder helps us recognize when the relationship is ready for
Susan Jarema:the referral. E stands for exchange referrals and
Susan Jarema:opportunities. Now we can begin opening doors for one another.
Susan Jarema:Let's say I'm talking with a business owner who says, "Hey,
Susan Jarema:my company's growing, but I'm really struggling with my new
Susan Jarema:manager, he can't seem to motivate the staff. Now I have a
Susan Jarema:trigger. I know someone in my network that is great at helping
Susan Jarema:leaders learn the skills to motivate teams. So I think I
Susan Jarema:know someone you should meet, and that's a referral. But
Susan Jarema:opportunities don't always mean clients. Maybe I say to someone,
Susan Jarema:I know a podcast looking for someone who speaks about your
Susan Jarema:topic or expertise, or you'd be a great speaker for an event I'm
Susan Jarema:speaking at. I'll introduce you to the host, or there's someone
Susan Jarema:in my network that I think you should know, or maybe I see
Susan Jarema:something they posted and I share it with someone who could
Susan Jarema:benefit from it. I could be referring that way. At the Grand
Susan Jarema:Connection, we talk a lot about grand giving. This is where
Susan Jarema:grand giving becomes very practical. We're asking, what
Susan Jarema:door could I open for this person? And we're doing it
Susan Jarema:because there's a genuine alignment and an opportunity to
Susan Jarema:help, not because we're keeping score. N stands for navigate a
Susan Jarema:collaboration, sometimes a relationship has the potential
Susan Jarema:to become something more.
Susan Jarema:Now we can explore working together, but I don't think that
Susan Jarema:necessarily means creating something huge. Start small.
Susan Jarema:Let's say you're a business coach and you've developed a
Susan Jarema:relationship with a marketing strategist. You serve similar
Susan Jarema:audiences, but you have complementary expertise. Instead
Susan Jarema:of saying, "Let's create a six months program together, what if
Susan Jarema:you said, "Why don't we co-host a one-hour workshop? Now you're
Susan Jarema:testing the collaboration. Do your audiences respond? Do your
Susan Jarema:teaching styles complement each other. Does the other person
Susan Jarema:promote the event? Do they communicate well? Do they follow
Susan Jarema:through? And here's another important question: Do you
Susan Jarema:actually enjoy working together? A small collaboration gives you
Susan Jarema:information that another coffee conversation simply can't. It
Susan Jarema:allows you to experience the partnership, and last in the
Susan Jarema:ascend model is D, deepen the partnership.
Susan Jarema:Finally, when something works, deepen it. I think this is
Susan Jarema:something entrepreneurs sometimes miss. We're often so
Susan Jarema:busy looking for the next connection that we don't fully
Susan Jarema:explore the relationships that were already working really
Susan Jarema:well. Suppose that workshop with the marketing strategist was a
Susan Jarema:big success. People loved it. You enjoyed working together.
Susan Jarema:Your audiences complemented each other. And instead of
Susan Jarema:immediately moving on, ask yourselves what else could we do
Susan Jarema:together? Maybe the workshop becomes a series. Maybe you
Susan Jarema:become ongoing referral partners. That happens a lot.
Susan Jarema:Maybe you create a bundle. Maybe you become affiliates for each
Susan Jarema:other's programs. Maybe you develop a shared offer, or
Susan Jarema:perhaps that relationship eventually becomes a much deeper
Susan Jarema:strategic partnership. This is where collaboration can begin
Susan Jarema:creating opportunities neither of you could have created quite
Susan Jarema:as easily alone. Now you don't have to ascend with everyone.
Susan Jarema:Here's something really important: you don't have to
Susan Jarema:climb the entire ascend collaboration ladder with
Susan Jarema:everyone you meet, and you probably shouldn't because
Susan Jarema:you're. Get pretty darn tired. One person might become an
Susan Jarema:incredible referral partner, but never a business collaborator.
Susan Jarema:Someone else might be a wonderful podcast guest or
Susan Jarema:speaker. Another person might become a trusted resource you
Susan Jarema:regularly introduce to your clients, and another might
Susan Jarema:simply be someone you enjoy connecting with and supporting.
Susan Jarema:Those are all valuable relationships. Ascend isn't
Susan Jarema:about pushing people toward the top of the ladder. It's about
Susan Jarema:recognizing where the relationship naturally belongs
Susan Jarema:and what the next appropriate step might be. Sometimes the
Susan Jarema:right next step is moving forward. Sometimes it's
Susan Jarema:continuing to nurture the relationship, and sometimes you
Susan Jarema:discover there isn't enough alignment to go any further, and
Susan Jarema:that's okay too. So here's your grand action for this episode:
Susan Jarema:choose five people already in your network who have the
Susan Jarema:potential to become stronger referral or collaboration
Susan Jarema:partners, and think about this intentionally. Look for a
Susan Jarema:natural business fit. Could be similar audiences. Your
Susan Jarema:expertise complements each other. They provide something
Susan Jarema:your clients need.
Susan Jarema:Of course, you're going to share values, and maybe there's some
Susan Jarema:opportunity where you can genuinely open the doors for
Susan Jarema:each other. Now place each person somewhere on your
collaboration ladder:A for authentic connection, S for
collaboration ladder:strength and trust and alignment, C for create referral
collaboration ladder:readiness, E for exchange referrals and opportunities, N
collaboration ladder:for navigate a collaboration, and D for deepen the
collaboration ladder:partnership. Then ask yourself one simple question: What is the
collaboration ladder:next natural step for this relationship? It could be
collaboration ladder:scheduling a one-on-one. Maybe you need to learn more about
collaboration ladder:what they do so you can look for referral opportunities. That
collaboration ladder:could just be researching online. Maybe it's making an
collaboration ladder:introduction. Maybe it's inviting them into your podcast.
collaboration ladder:Maybe you're going to test something small, or perhaps
collaboration ladder:you've already successfully worked together, and it's time
collaboration ladder:to ask, "What else could we create together? Don't try to
collaboration ladder:jump to the top of the ladder. Take the next right step and
collaboration ladder:nurture the relationship from there.
collaboration ladder:Now, one final thought: you don't necessarily need another
collaboration ladder:100 connections. Sometimes grand growth comes from looking at the
collaboration ladder:relationships you already have and asking what's possible from
collaboration ladder:here. Get clear about where the relationship is take the next
collaboration ladder:appropriate step, give it time, build trust, create value for
collaboration ladder:one another, and when the alignment is there, ascend
collaboration ladder:together. If you'd like to meet more heart-centered
collaboration ladder:entrepreneurs and potential referral and collaboration
collaboration ladder:partners, we invite you to join us at an upcoming Grand Mixer or
collaboration ladder:any of our other Edu networking events. Grab your guest pass and
collaboration ladder:Grand Growth Bundle at GrandConnection.ca/gifts, and
collaboration ladder:please subscribe to the Grand Connection podcast and share
collaboration ladder:this episode with someone you'd love to ascend with. In fact,
collaboration ladder:sharing this episode might be a wonderful way to start the next
collaboration ladder:conversation. Until next time, keep connecting, keep creating,
collaboration ladder:and collaborate.
