Divorce is often seen as an ending, but what if it is actually the beginning of something far more powerful?
In this episode of The D Shift, Mardi Winder sits down with Michele Heffron to explore what really happens for women navigating divorce and major life transitions, especially in midlife. This conversation moves beyond surface-level discussions and into identity, values, boundaries, and the patterns that keep women stuck.
Together, Mardi and Michele unpack the emotional realities many women face but rarely say out loud. The pressure to stay in relationships that no longer align. The internal conflict between fear, obligation, and guilt. And the deeper question so many women struggle with, which is who they are without the marriage.
The conversation introduces Michele’s VIVID framework as a way to move through divorce with intention rather than reaction. It also explores the importance of values alignment, identity shifts, and learning how to establish and maintain boundaries, especially after years of patterns that no longer serve.
This episode is not about blame or regret. It is about awareness, ownership, and the opportunity to create something different moving forward.
The episode explores why:
• Divorce is not just a legal process, it is an identity shift that requires intentional rebuilding
• Many women remain stuck in fear, obligation, and guilt without questioning where those beliefs originate
• Values are reflected in behavior, not just words
• Boundaries are essential for self-respect and long-term change
• Being alone is not the same as being lonely
• Without self-awareness, patterns in relationships tend to repeat
• Real change begins when women give themselves permission rather than waiting for it externally

[00:00:00] I think that one of the big ones is that we do have a choice and to allow that. But I also just think that most women don't lack courage. I really don't think they do. I think what they lack is permission. And sometimes when they learn how to give themselves permission to do something, not from somebody else, because oftentimes we are waiting for somebody else to give us permission.
[00:00:30] And that's what I do work, and you probably do this too, is just to help them see that their voice and how do they give themselves permission. But that takes a little bit of unraveling and rebuilding old belief systems. But that I think is one of the biggest things is that knowing you can give yourself permission to do what you know in your heart is really truly asking you to do.
