Manon Bolliger: Welcome to the Healers Cafe, the #1 show for
00:00:04
medical practitioners and holistic healers to have heart
00:00:08
to heart conversations about their day to day lives while
00:00:13
sharing their expertise for improving your health and
00:00:17
wellness.
00:00:20
So, welcome to the Healers Cafe, and today I have Cheryl Meyer,
00:00:25
and she's otherwise known as Cheryl M Health Muse, and once
00:00:32
upon a time she was a successful solopreneur in the jewelry
00:00:36
design business and making seven figure business, and one day she
00:00:44
woke up with excruciating pain. So, if this wasn't a common
00:00:54
story, you, you would think that you know this happens, and this
00:01:02
is so rare, and of course, you found a solution. You went to
00:01:05
the doctor, you took some pills, and they worked, right?
00:01:09
Cheryl Meyer: I went to the doctor, she ran five rounds of
00:01:13
testing. Guess what, there's nothing wrong with you, that's
00:01:17
Vodafone. I can't function, I can't mold, I hurt.
00:01:21
Manon Bolliger: Yeah. Okay. And then it's in your head. We
00:01:25
haven't met yet, but I.. this is basically.. I'm.. I'm looking at
00:01:29
the other stories I've heard. It's all in your head. Are you
00:01:32
suffering from depression? Are you sure you don't want to take
00:01:35
sort of antidepressants? Right.
00:01:39
Cheryl Meyer: Yep.
00:01:39
Manon Bolliger: Part of the story. Okay. Yeah. And then she
00:01:42
Cheryl Meyer: did say, I'll give you steroids because you say you
00:01:47
hurt, I'll give you steroids for that. I'm not taking steroids if
00:01:51
I don't need them, I'm not never taking steroids. Period.
00:01:54
Manon Bolliger: No, and that's because you had inflammation,
00:01:57
and that's the magic drug for inflammation in our, you know,
00:02:01
very developed allopathic model of, let's say, it's not patient
00:02:08
care, even I think it's patient stagnation, it's, it's disease
00:02:13
management, actually, that is
00:02:15
Cheryl Meyer: what it is,
00:02:16
Manon Bolliger: which is really a good name for it, because all
00:02:18
they do is manage the disease, and you know, inadvertently by
00:02:24
some, because I think there are some innocent people in that
00:02:27
field, but everyone who's woken up feels like a charlatan, or
00:02:32
like they're peddling drugs, or like something has changed, and
00:02:38
I have quite a few MD friends, and they're getting very tired
00:02:44
of their role, and it didn't used to be that way. I think
00:02:47
there was a little bit more. I'm not saying that, you know, it
00:02:51
wasn't always the intent of it, but it's, you know, from the
00:02:57
Rockefeller Foundation, and everything, and
00:02:59
Cheryl Meyer: there's reasons, you know, their number one
00:03:01
source of information is their pharmaceutical rep,
00:03:03
Manon Bolliger: correct. Yeah, yeah, you know, you put two and
00:03:07
two together, and you go, "Gee, what does this have to do with
00:03:09
healing and health, right? Okay, so let's start with what
00:03:15
happened to you, because obviously something changed, and
00:03:18
what were you. why don't you go through the whole story, and
00:03:23
from the point of view that somebody could follow, going,
00:03:26
gee, that's a good thing, I maybe I should do that next, or
00:03:31
you know, how did you go, how did you deal with this?
00:03:34
Cheryl Meyer: Okay, well, let me tell you, first, my body was
00:03:37
talking to me long before I paid attention, I have a joke that my
00:03:41
when the universe wants me to get something first, it slaps me
00:03:45
on the shoulder, then I get the NCIS slap, and then finally the
00:03:49
two by four came comes down. So I waited for the two by four to
00:03:53
come down. I was so focused on keeping my business going, I was
00:03:57
sort of like, shush, I don't want to hear you, and I want
00:04:01
everyone to learn to listen to their body, because their body
00:04:04
is very smart. So that's my first tip to everybody. But I
00:04:09
woke up one morning and everything hurt. Do I have the
00:04:12
flu? What the heck's going on here? And after five days it
00:04:15
hadn't gotten better, so I went to the doctor, started getting
00:04:18
tests run, five rounds of tests, nothing wrong with me, baloney.
00:04:24
I knew something was wrong, but I said to her, I'm going to dig
00:04:28
into this and I'm going to find out what's wrong with me. So
00:04:31
you'll be back. I said, no, I probably won't. And I was really
00:04:35
lucky because I tripped into what's now known as the
00:04:39
functional medical community, and this was 14 years ago, at
00:04:43
the time they were all fairly new as functional doctors, and
00:04:48
they were running all kinds of symposiums, and I watched 19 of
00:04:52
them with multiple doctors, and I made notes, I started writing
00:04:56
down what their threads were, and the first thing that caught
00:04:59
my. Attention was they all either got sick themselves and
00:05:03
couldn't help themselves, or they had a loved one get sick
00:05:07
that they couldn't help, so they ended up going for the
00:05:10
additional functional medical training, which means they
00:05:15
looked at the whole body and not just at a body part that was
00:05:19
causing trouble, and so that's where I started, and I was
00:05:22
lucky, but I wrote down notes like toxic load. What was toxic
00:05:27
load about the fact that I should be eating organic real
00:05:32
food, which resonated with me. That was logical. So I started
00:05:37
looking into what does that mean, and how could I do that,
00:05:41
and as I learned things, I started to implement. I started
00:05:45
researching all the toxins in my life, and I was appalled,
00:05:50
because they were everywhere. They were in my food, they were
00:05:53
in the way my food was grown, they were in the processed food,
00:05:57
everything that went in or on or near my body was toxic, and
00:06:02
things like the cosmetic industry functions by monitoring
00:06:06
itself, and they're not doing a good job at it. The first thing
00:06:11
I looked up on a website called ewg.org was my face makeup, and
00:06:17
it was an expensive French brand that was a nine out of 10 on
00:06:21
toxicity, so literally I had been poisoning myself right
00:06:25
through my skin, and I got angry. Why was my government
00:06:30
allowing me to be poisoned? And I mentioned that because I can't
00:06:34
tell you how many people along the course of my journey said my
00:06:38
government wouldn't allow me to get poisoned. Oh yeah, it is
00:06:41
every day, and so I decided I found a man named Howard Lyman,
00:06:47
who wants us all to be an army of one and own it ourselves, and
00:06:51
and search for what we need, and I decided I was going to be an
00:06:55
army of one, so I dug it, I found a woman named Dr. Deanna
00:06:59
Minnich, who believes in eating the rainbow of all the different
00:07:03
colors of organic food, because each color has different gifts
00:07:07
for the body. So I started going to farmers markets, buying my
00:07:11
food as close to the farm as I could, because things like
00:07:14
spinach lose 30% of their potency within three days. I
00:07:18
wanted to get stuff into my body, on my body, and around my
00:07:23
environment, that would stop poisoning me, so that I could. I
00:07:28
was determined I was going to get well, and I never doubted
00:07:33
that I would find what I needed to reverse what was going on
00:07:37
with my body. So that's important too, because as I work
00:07:41
with clients now, I have learned that if they don't believe it's
00:07:45
possible, then it's not going to happen. I'm working with someone
00:07:49
with MS right now whose doctor keeps telling him his disease is
00:07:53
going to progress.
00:07:54
Manon Bolliger: Yeah, and I
00:07:55
Cheryl Meyer: said, "Okay, your tour this week is to have a
00:07:58
conversation with him to stop saying that, because as long as
00:08:02
he says it and you believe it, guess what, that's exactly
00:08:06
what's going to happen. You have to believe that you are the
00:08:10
captain of your ship, you are the creator, and you can change
00:08:15
the direction of your health if you start to change your
00:08:19
environment. One of the people I started following was Dr. Bruce
00:08:22
Lipton, who discovered and formed the theory of epigenetics
00:08:27
that our genetics have nothing to do with what we get, it has
00:08:31
to do with our body and what the environment is like that
00:08:36
genetics is sitting in. So, if you're constantly putting in
00:08:39
toxins, which are poison. Guess what, you're going to get sick
00:08:43
if you're constantly eating the ultra-processed diet, which is
00:08:46
fake food. You're not giving your body anything to run on, so
00:08:50
guess what, you're going to get sick. So you have to change your
00:08:55
environment and start doing things that give your body the
00:09:00
opportunity to return back to balance that really became the
00:09:05
key. It didn't happen overnight. It took me five years to
00:09:09
eliminate every toxin I could find in my air, in my perfume,
00:09:14
in the cleaning materials that I had, in my food, in my pots and
00:09:20
pans, and the things that I was cooking with, and what I was
00:09:24
storing my food in, in the water coming out of my tap. It took me
00:09:28
five years to get rid of all of that poison, and so I'll tell
00:09:33
you, it's not easy. You have to have an intention, you have to
00:09:37
stay focused. I did it systematically, category by
00:09:41
category, but in five years I started to feel pretty darn good
00:09:47
again, and I went on Medicare and found my own functional
00:09:50
doctor, and even that wasn't easy. There is a site called
00:09:54
ifm.org where you can put in your zip code and they pop up,
00:09:57
but none of them at the time took any kind of insurance. Yes,
00:10:01
and so I ended up driving two hours to the person who I
00:10:07
thought could help me, and it was worth it, because she took
00:10:10
me to the next level. She knew things that I hadn't found, like
00:10:14
that I had all kinds of food sensitivities, and it ended up I
00:10:18
had 19 of them, and by eliminating those, wow, it was
00:10:23
instant pain relief, and I stopped having flares every
00:10:27
other day. So it's like finding your jigsaw puzzles, but you
00:10:32
stay so focused and so convinced that you're going to find all
00:10:37
your puzzle pieces, you just keep going until you start
00:10:40
feeling great, and that's the goal. I had felt lousy for
00:10:46
years, and thought that was the way I was supposed to feel,
00:10:48
because by the time I got sick, I was already 63 Well, today I'm
00:10:53
77 and I feel way better than I did in my 40s and my 50s. So
00:10:58
it's not age, it has to do with how I live my life and what I've
00:11:03
done with my environment to create a life that's clean that
00:11:08
supports me and it is so worth it
00:11:12
Manon Bolliger: right now. How did you get that like deep
00:11:17
knowing that you're going to find a solution and you just
00:11:20
need to keep going.
00:11:22
Cheryl Meyer: Well, in a lot of ways, I was lucky because I grew
00:11:24
up with two parents whose favorite thing to say to me was
00:11:28
I could do anything I set my mind to.
00:11:31
Manon Bolliger: Okay, okay. Both
00:11:32
Cheryl Meyer: of my parents got unusual diseases. My father got
00:11:35
a very rare epilepsy, and he was a scientist, so he was
00:11:39
constantly researching because he wanted to help himself with
00:11:43
that, and then my mother got something called multiple system
00:11:46
atrophy, which is related to Parkinson's, but not
00:11:50
Parkinson's, so nobody in the heck out there in the doctor
00:11:53
field had a clue what to do with her, and so I started digging
00:11:56
into medical journals and finding things myself, so when I
00:12:00
would go to medical appointments with them, I would raise
00:12:03
questions. Have you thought of this? Could we try that? And the
00:12:06
response in the beginning from their doctors was, Who's the
00:12:10
doctor here? And my response was, Who's the daughter? My
00:12:15
mother's doctor, I said, How many patients do you have? He
00:12:18
said, several 100. I said, Well, I only have one mother, so could
00:12:22
we do this together, because I can concentrate on things that
00:12:26
might help her that you're not going to find, because you have
00:12:28
200 of her, and she was supposed to only live two years, and she
00:12:34
lived 10, and when she died, he called me and said, I wish
00:12:38
everybody had a daughter like you, he said, because our
00:12:41
success was because we did do it together.
00:12:44
Manon Bolliger: Yeah,
00:12:45
Cheryl Meyer: so I knew that if I dug into whatever was going on
00:12:48
with my body, which was not even given a diagnosis,
00:12:52
Manon Bolliger: yeah,
00:12:54
Cheryl Meyer: that I was going to find it, and I was determined
00:12:57
that I was going to find it. Ended up, I had fibromyalgia,
00:13:01
Hashimotos, IBS. I had type two diabetes that my doctor had
00:13:08
missed, and it was bad. My A 1c was 7.7 I mean it was high. And
00:13:15
so, and then as I started working with my functional
00:13:20
doctor, I also discovered by accident that I had a fatty
00:13:23
liver,
00:13:24
Manon Bolliger: right?
00:13:24
Cheryl Meyer: So, and that wasn't a surprise, since I had
00:13:27
the diabetes, and I had eaten poorly for 63 years of my life.
00:13:33
So that became a concentration to learn everything I could
00:13:36
learn about the liver, which is the workhorse of the body. So,
00:13:40
if your liver isn't healthy, it impacts everything else going on
00:13:43
in your body, and it actually ends up, it's the number one
00:13:46
cause of heart disease.
00:13:47
Commercial Break: What would your life be like if you were
00:13:49
pain-free? If you were one of the millions who suffer from
00:13:53
chronic pain, the thought of just one day without it may seem
00:13:57
impossible. This is often because conventional medicine
00:14:01
tends to fall short in the treatment of pain, opting to
00:14:04
prescribe pills or recommend surgery rather than getting to
00:14:08
the root cause of the problem, but if you are suffering with
00:14:11
emotional or physical pain, there is hope. Join the founder
00:14:16
and CEO of Bowen College, Manon Bolliger, live online for your
00:14:22
body mind reboot. Learn how to listen to your symptoms and get
00:14:27
to the root cause of your pain. Plus, be trained in basic bone
00:14:31
therapy moves, so that you can reboot your body for optimal
00:14:35
health. You don't have to live in pain, you can heal. Stop the
00:14:41
pain pill cycle by visiting www.yourbodymindreboot.com to
00:14:47
learn more and to register,
00:14:57
Cheryl Meyer: so you need to follow the threads that. You
00:15:00
discover as you research, and you need to take it seriously
00:15:04
that each of these little gems is going to get you one step
00:15:08
closer to feeling great, and that's what I did. I am now 14
00:15:13
years away from starting this journey. I still have some
00:15:17
puzzle pieces I'm looking for. Somebody who follows me on
00:15:21
Facebook said, 'Are you really as healthy as you say you are? I
00:15:25
feel great every day. I pop out of bed happy as heck, because
00:15:30
the food I eat turns on all my happiness. I am as healthy as I
00:15:35
tell you I am, but that doesn't, as it is, and you never stop
00:15:41
looking for your pieces,
00:15:43
Manon Bolliger: right? Right now, so how in your search,
00:15:49
right? So I understand the background, where you knew that
00:15:54
researching was something that could be done, right? So that's
00:15:58
a lot of people just think that somehow doctors know everything,
00:16:03
and they don't research, and you know part of it is true, they,
00:16:07
they don't research, because a lot of times now you know it's
00:16:12
like they're overwhelmed by crazy, silly hours where you
00:16:16
don't get to know your patient or client at all, and and then
00:16:21
they have these, you know, reps that tell them, well, this will
00:16:25
fix that and that, and so it's like, it's like, okay, you know
00:16:28
what, I'll just use the cookbook rather than use my brain and go
00:16:33
deeper, and so I think a lot of the art of really asking
00:16:39
questions and getting to the root of things has been lost,
00:16:44
you know. Not everyone.
00:16:46
Cheryl Meyer: I actually read that from when something new
00:16:49
gets discovered. It's discovered in whatever it's minute field is
00:16:54
in, and it can take as long as 15 years before it will get into
00:16:59
the general medical journal that your doctor might read it, so
00:17:04
your thing is you want to find it early. If there's something
00:17:07
new that you want to pull the thread on and question, and I've
00:17:12
had formed partnerships with every doctor I have had, and I
00:17:16
will go to anybody who can help me. I have a naturopath, I have
00:17:20
a functional doctor. I have a regular doctor, and they all
00:17:24
know I'm in charge of my health. You are my partner, you are my
00:17:29
advisor, and we're going to take care of my health together. And
00:17:33
I currently have a conventionally trained doctor
00:17:36
who lives holistically, so he gets it, and his theory is, you
00:17:41
do the least invasive first, and then, if you have to, then you
00:17:45
can go to taking that serious medication, or doing that
00:17:49
surgery, or whatever it is, but we always start with the least
00:17:52
invasive, and you need to find those doctors that you believe
00:17:57
will support your body in finding holistic solutions, and
00:18:01
it doesn't mean I don't take drugs, because the drug can
00:18:05
mitigate whatever is going on in my body until I can change my
00:18:09
lifestyle enough to start to cure it, and the doctor knows if
00:18:13
I'm going to take a drug, I'm going to research it, I'm going
00:18:15
to know what the downside is, because they all come with
00:18:17
gifts, both good and bad, and so if I start to get better, then
00:18:23
he's going to help me wean off of that medication, because I'm
00:18:26
not taking it forever, and one of the first things I had to
00:18:31
learn is there is no magic pill, you are the magic pill, people
00:18:36
my age think they're going to find the magic pill, and they're
00:18:39
going to feel better and be able to live out life. It doesn't
00:18:42
exist. You are the magic pill, and your lifestyle changes are
00:18:47
the magic that your body can convert to wellness. So, you
00:18:51
have to own it. You have to question, you have to research,
00:18:55
and there's probably some bad information out there, as well
00:18:58
as good information. So, I found doctors that I trusted, and
00:19:02
that's where I would start as I researched each subject, but you
00:19:08
can do it, and then you go to whoever your care taker is, and
00:19:12
you have a robust conversation with them, so that you're sure
00:19:16
you stay on track for getting the best possible solution for
00:19:20
your body, no, not in your body, he doesn't know how you feel,
00:19:25
Manon Bolliger: no, no, exactly, so, so the, the research part I
00:19:30
get, the, the, the drive that you're going to get on top of
00:19:36
this, and that, well, no, that, not that one, sorry, because I
00:19:39
think that you were an entrepreneur before, so I know
00:19:42
where drive comes from, and
00:19:45
Cheryl Meyer: I'm a personality, because my stress level was so
00:19:50
out of control, I shot up and used up all my cortisol and was
00:19:55
borderline Addison's disease when I got sick, that was one of
00:19:59
the. First places I had to dig in and get under control.
00:20:03
Manon Bolliger: Okay, so actually that's interesting.
00:20:06
Let's go there for one moment. How did you choose to get that
00:20:12
under control out of all the technologies out there and
00:20:15
things? What did you do?
00:20:17
Cheryl Meyer: Well, I decided I was going to take a yoga class.
00:20:21
Manon Bolliger: Okay,
00:20:22
Cheryl Meyer: but I don't like yoga where they're going to tie
00:20:23
me into a knot.
00:20:26
Manon Bolliger: Okay,
00:20:26
Cheryl Meyer: so I looked until I found a local class, which was
00:20:29
by a company called Body and Brain, and they're all over the
00:20:32
country, and they do a towel yoga that's a combination of
00:20:38
some yoga, some isometric, some general wellness, mind over
00:20:45
body. It was a combination of everything, and I have to add to
00:20:50
it. While I was looking for this yoga class, I had also been in a
00:20:54
long-term relationship with a man who wasn't going to change
00:20:57
for me. He was not going to let me dictate how he was going to
00:21:00
eat. He was not going to adopt any healthy habits, and so after
00:21:04
many years we had to break, which was just all additional
00:21:07
stress, which didn't help the situation. So I found my yoga
00:21:14
class, and then I dug in what were other solutions, and I
00:21:18
found a man who started integrative medicine, called Dr.
00:21:21
Andrew Weil, and he had come up at that point, which was 15
00:21:25
years ago. Now, there are all kinds of breathing exercises,
00:21:28
but I do his breathing exercise, which takes four minutes to go
00:21:36
through the rounds, and it releases all the tension in your
00:21:41
nervous system, and lets you take the top off your stress, so
00:21:45
you can function again.
