Rethinking Abundance: Trust, Generosity, and What We Already Have

Rethinking Abundance: Trust, Generosity, and What We Already Have

What does abundance mean when it is no longer measured only by how much money we have?

Christine reflects on the times when money, time, and capacity have felt limited, and on the practices she has used to shift her relationship with scarcity. From leaving a few dollars where someone else might unexpectedly find them to choosing generosity with salon clients who were facing financial strain, she explores abundance as something we can participate in rather than simply possess.

The conversation reaches beyond money into reciprocity, trust, community, collaboration, resilience, and the support we receive from the natural world. Even a penny on the ground becomes a reminder to notice what is already present.

For Christine, abundance can also look like peace, wisdom shared between people, the air gifted by trees, and the strength that comes from being held by community.

This episode invites us to reconsider what we count as wealth and where abundance may already be showing up in our lives.

Mysteries to Uncover:

  • A different way to think about abundance when money, time, or resources feel limited.
  • How generosity and reciprocity may shift the way we experience what we have available to give.
  • What our inherited beliefs about money might reveal about the way we understand scarcity and sufficiency.
  • The forms of abundance that can appear through community, collaboration, resilience, and shared wisdom.
  • What the natural world may remind us about value when we stop measuring everything in financial terms.

Christine Shahin:

Welcome to Goddess Beauty Mysteries, the podcast exploring henna, ancestral wisdom, and plant-based beauty traditions. I'm your host, Christine Shaheen, author and founder of Goddess Beauty. Together, we are bringing ancestral wisdom into the present to create a more beautiful and sustainable future. Thank you for joining me to remember the Goddess Beauty Mysteries. Hi, every beauty. Thank you for joining another episode of Goddess Beauty Mysteries, Henna and Ancestral Wisdom Traditions Podcast. Have you ever felt like you didn't have the time or the money to do the thing?

Christine Shahin:

I know, I have done that. You know, it's like oh, when I have the money, I'll do this, and when I have the time, I'll do that. And that one is very present for me right now-the time piece, because there's lots going on, and our vigilance needs to be on many, many fronts, and growing a business and tending to family and community, I tend to be like, okay, I don't know if there's any more I can I can take on right now, including a podcast. But we got through that one with the help of my Podcast team, and now we're just gonna start talking about money, money, money, money. Ah, that illusory,

Christine Shahin:

tangible commodity that we trade in an interesting concept. So, how do we navigate those times when we feel like we have limitations on our abundance? For myself, if I were struggling in the salon. I've had some really great days, and then some very challenging days in salon. And oftentimes, I noticed that my most challenging days in the salon revolved around just me, just my challenging mood. Whatever was going on around me, whatever I was responding to, almost seemed to indicate whether or not the frequency was good enough for people to want to walk in my door. They didn't even have to

Christine Shahin:

walk by, you know. It's just like I was not in a good state, and so sometimes when I would have these places where my concept of abundance was limited. I had some tricks that I would do to make myself feel that that was not true. That that was not true. That I was not limited in my abundance, and some of those strategies included taking my last few dollars in spending them, spending them in different ways. Sometimes I would, if I had like $10 left to get me through the month or something, I would just take that 10 and I would turn it into 10 ones, and I would go around the town, the

Christine Shahin:

village, the community that I was in, and I would poke them in little places where maybe kids would find them or elders could find them, and it would maybe give them a sense of abundance in their own life. If I was also in a place where I felt like stretched, but I had maybe a little bit more, I would take a $10 bill or a $20 bill, and I would hide those, believing that sharing that abundance would spark and ignite that. Oh, the universe is looking out for me and other people. Or sometimes I would spend it on myself if I actually needed something and I'd been postponing getting it, and I

Christine Shahin:

was like, "Wow, this seems ridiculous. Why would I spend this money on myself right now? But I realized too that it was an affirmation and a proclamation that my needs mattered, and also I was trusting that it was going to be abundant. It was the action itself was just going to bring me more abundance in my space. My heart and my life. So those were some of the the tools that I used, and I'm wondering, you know, for you, what are some of those tools that you use if you feel like your abundance is limited? Do you have tools? Do they come from Your culture is there a thing that you

Christine Shahin:

practice personally? I know yesterday my husband and I were we went to the local garlic festival, and where we parked there was a penny on the driveway, and I was remembering seeing that penny. I was remembering Dr. Wayne Dyer and how he would say that when you found even a penny on the pavement, that it was a symbol of the universe's abundance and and support. And so, I picked it up. I was like, "Oh, it's a penny.

Christine Shahin:

What can you do with that today? But I just remembered Dr. Wayne Dyer, and he had said, "You know, pick it up and say the words. I give praise and thanks for this symbol of your abundance, which is everywhere. And so now I have a penny in my pocket, and I'm abundant. So I know that sometimes in salons, some of my clients would feel like they couldn't come in for their scheduled appointment. They were facing their own limitations of abundance, and I always would take them. You know, I felt strongly enough that I have something that I can give, and I know a lot of times in our culture we feel

Christine Shahin:

like that when we give, we're putting ourselves in a state of lack, and that's not true because you can't give what you don't have. So when you give something, you're affirming that you have something to give. So you know it wasn't abused, but it was gifted, and I was very pleased that I could gift those things that they might need at that time. I continue to practice some of that today in different ways. I've started to create an order form that I put in the orders that I send out, where people can choose to place the order on a piece of paper and send a check, like the good old days

Christine Shahin:

with mail order businesses, so that everything isn't necessarily dependent on a digital economy, and gives people a choice of how they would like to reciprocate, and of course, it kind of minimizes a little bit of those digital risks, exposing your accounts to fraud and stuff like that. So, how do you navigate some of those things? What are some of the things if you have a business that you include in your in your practice with your clients to reinforce alternatives for them, or do you have a specific practice that comes from your family or your culture that taught you about abundance

Christine Shahin:

was it taught like this is money doesn't grow on trees? That one's a common one, right? Where our parents or we hear over and over again, money isn't growing on trees, and so. But I don't know. Maybe there is a tree. Certainly, our trees give us many blessings of abundance. And so, whether it's actual tangible money that grows on trees, or it's the air we breathe. What's the price of the air we breathe that the trees gift us? Yeah. So when I was practicing putting this business together, there was a lot of juggling, you know, like doing this and trying to get to that, so this other thing

Christine Shahin:

could happen. But today, I'm less-I don't want to say concerned, but I certainly have a place where. I center more, and I trust more. I release more, and if for nothing else, the gift of peace that that brings is priceless. And sometimes I fall into those places of fear, and again, you know, I can find support from my community, the joy of collaborating, the strength of their wisdom that holds me in a space that allows me to continue to persevere, to be resilient. These are all manifestations of abundance that I am so so grateful for, so grateful for, and the fact that you would listen to

Christine Shahin:

this podcast and contribute ways of your own wisdom here, so that we can collect that wisdom and share that wisdom with others that could probably benefit from that, and we all benefit from each other. So I thank you again for joining me for listening, I'm getting very excited to get nearer to a time when I will be bringing in interviews and introducing you to some really amazing people, and I'm so excited for that. That getting through laying some of this groundwork of who I am, so that you can get to know me better, and when you share, I get to know you better. And then knowing that we

Christine Shahin:

will be bringing in some really awesome people for you to get to know as well, so I'm super grateful for that. Okay, so thank you for listening. I really enjoy spending time with you this way, and here's to beauty and blessings naturally.
