Welcome to Destin for Success. I'm your
Jennifer Takagi:host Jennifer Takagi, and today we have the pleasure of hearing
Jennifer Takagi:from Dale Young, and he's going to talk to us about the power of
Jennifer Takagi:aligning your faith and business. Dale, welcome to the
Jennifer Takagi:show.
Dale Young:Well, thank you. I'm honored to be here.
Jennifer Takagi:So, tell me, how did you come to know about
Jennifer Takagi:this? How did you get into this work? What's your background?
Dale Young:Oh gosh, so I
Dale Young:started
Dale Young:out. I started out in the IT world. I was a computer geek
Dale Young:back in 1973. I started getting paid as a computer geek,
Dale Young:programming computers, many computers in those days, and I
Dale Young:kind of grew up through all that, and then in 1992,
Dale Young:something changed, and so I can go into that story if you'd
Dale Young:like. But basically, there was a there was a shift in in my
Dale Young:being, and that started me on a 30-year journey that culminated
Dale Young:in 2022 with the phrase "My calling is to inspire your
Dale Young:calling. And so that's really that's kind of the story. If if
Dale Young:you want to look at the big overview, so we can dive into
Dale Young:whichever part of that interests you,
Jennifer Takagi:I mean, all of it is so interesting to me
Jennifer Takagi:because there there are people who knew from a very young age
Jennifer Takagi:what they wanted to be and do in the world, and they stuck to it.
Jennifer Takagi:But most of us just kind of followed the path in front of
Jennifer Takagi:us, which sounds a little bit of what what you did-you had a path
Jennifer Takagi:and made a pivot, a shift. I often call it a hard left turn,
Jennifer Takagi:and so here we are. So, okay, let's talk about how you came to
Jennifer Takagi:know and learn about and teach about sharing about aligning
Jennifer Takagi:your faith and your business-that's well, it's the
Jennifer Takagi:name of your title, but it's very intriguing to me.
Dale Young:All right. Well, basically, through my IT career,
Dale Young:which lasted roughly 50 years, five decades, I was I was just
Dale Young:always growing, always personal development. I was always the
Dale Young:weird IP person that actually liked to talk to the people I
Dale Young:was working with, right? You know, I wasn't the one that
Dale Young:wanted the steak under the door type of thing, right? So, so I
Dale Young:guess I was just always the oddball out at through my whole
Dale Young:career, and that led to the fact that in I don't know 2000 was
Dale Young:part of a startup company that hit number 10 on the fastest
Dale Young:growing companies in the U.S. and had to shut it down three
Dale Young:years later because leadership structure just was wrong and all
Dale Young:that sort of stuff and through this whole journey-it was just
Dale Young:one of those things where, in 1998, I accepted Christ as my
Dale Young:personal Lord and Savior, and that just kind of set me in. It
Dale Young:accelerated my motion along the path that had started back in
Dale Young:1992, and through that, I got into coaching, and coaching got
Dale Young:became an ICF certified coach. A lot of other coaching stuff,
Dale Young:Gallup certified coach, that kind of thing. And through all
Dale Young:of that, it was like, yeah, but I really care about the business
Dale Young:too. I I really want I I want the the coaching and the
Dale Young:business to work together, so I really became more of a business
Dale Young:coach rather than just a life coach, and so and then it was
Dale Young:like, but I got to have the faith in there as well. So, so
Dale Young:right now I'm business, faith, coaching, and technology all
Dale Young:blended together, and I kind of live at that intersection.
Dale Young:Matter of fact, I've actually picked up here recently in the
Dale Young:last couple of years a Go High Level agency, so that I can
Dale Young:provide CRM support for my clients and such like that. And
Dale Young:what it came down to was God was telling me that I I existed in
Dale Young:the intersection, and that I was not only existing in the
Dale Young:intersection, I was aligning everything in the intersection,
Dale Young:and so through that it was like, okay, well, you know, all right,
Dale Young:this is this is good. I'm I'm aligning things. How does that
Dale Young:all work together? And so I started writing about how I had
Dale Young:impacted some of my clients, and for example, Sam is one of my
Dale Young:one of my clients. It's not short for Samantha; it's
Dale Young:actually her initials. But she's always been called Sam her whole
Dale Young:life, and she started through this assessment that I do called
Dale Young:Revealing Strengths in Identity, and she said at the end of that.
Dale Young:She said, "Well, you know, I've always just been trying to do
Dale Young:the best I could do through my whole life, and I realized that
Dale Young:I was doing what everybody told me to do, and not what God meant
Dale Young:me to do. Okay, and so when I stopped swimming upstream,
Dale Young:that's when the magic happened. And she she totally changed her
Dale Young:profession. She quit what she was doing, sold her old
Dale Young:business, started a new business, and has just done
Dale Young:tremendous over the last five years. So six years now.
Jennifer Takagi:You know that alignment just matters so much,
Jennifer Takagi:and I, in my podcast and in my work with clients, we talk about
Jennifer Takagi:alignment, and it's like sometimes things are not working
Jennifer Takagi:out well, and it's because of that missing alignment piece.
Jennifer Takagi:And so, I can completely relate to to much of what you're what
Jennifer Takagi:you're sharing because it's so important to have the both and,
Jennifer Takagi:I often say I'm a both and, not an either or kind of girl.
Dale Young:Right. Well, God, God's a both and. So I mean,
Dale Young:Jesus was both God and man. You know, how do you how do you
Dale Young:reconcile that that type of thing? So yeah, yeah, it's
Dale Young:completely true that if you don't get into alignment, it
Dale Young:doesn't work. And one of the big things that I focus on on my
Dale Young:coaching is aligning who you are and why you're here. I think
Dale Young:those are the two biggest questions in the world for any
individual:is who are you and why are you here? And the what I
individual:found through brain science in the last couple of years is that
individual:the who are you is has both a personal and a group identity
individual:associated with it. Who you are in terms of the group, your
individual:family of origin, or your church community, or the people you
individual:work with, or maybe even your pickleball buddies, right? You
individual:know, they're all the community around you. Jim Rohn said you're
individual:the average of the five people you hang around with, right?
individual:Okay, well that community impacts impacts you, and you
individual:impact that community. Okay, so it's a both-way street, right?
individual:And so you have a personal identity and you have a group
individual:identity, which I call community. What's all? What's
individual:the community around you? Okay, and then you throw in the
individual:purpose or the calling or the why on top of that, and having
individual:those three pieces together, I call that the triad of
individual:significant impact. You can have one of those pieces and make an
individual:impact, but it's probably not going to be significant. It's
individual:probably not going to be long term. But if you have all three
individual:of those together in alignment, then you're going to create a
individual:significant impact.
Jennifer Takagi:Oh my gosh! So powerful, so incredibly
Jennifer Takagi:powerful. So when you when you blended your things and made
Jennifer Takagi:this-I mean, you know-living in that intersection, which I love
Jennifer Takagi:so much, because like it all comes together beautifully. So
Jennifer Takagi:did that create stress or drama in your life and your circle and
Jennifer Takagi:those five people that you hang out with the most, or did this
Jennifer Takagi:just all seem like a natural transition? And the reason I ask
Jennifer Takagi:that question, as entrepreneurs going back to those kids who
Jennifer Takagi:knew what they wanted to do when they started as entrepreneurs,
Jennifer Takagi:like I started down one path, I was on that path a long time.
Jennifer Takagi:Then it was like, yeah, I don't, I, I think I need to shift here
Jennifer Takagi:or there. So that's why I ask. I'm just curious about how other
Jennifer Takagi:people responded to your shifts and changes.
Dale Young:Well, it's something that I've been on on that 30
Dale Young:year journey, really, you know. And through that 30 year
Dale Young:journey, there were places that I had to say, okay, these are
Dale Young:not, this is not one of my five people that I want to hang with,
Dale Young:you know, and whatever. And actually, that's another piece
Dale Young:that I talk about in the book is I talk about what I call the
Dale Young:relationship bullseye, okay? And I think that you've got an inner
Dale Young:core of about three to five people. You've got a core group,
Dale Young:you know, intercore close friends that's maybe about a
Dale Young:dozen or so, and then you've got a tribe of maybe about 70, and
Dale Young:then you get into you know the bigger circles of you know okay
Dale Young:the followers of 500 or the 1000s or whatever right you can
Dale Young:visualize it kind of like a bullseye right, and these are
Dale Young:all based on the life of Jesus right. He had 70 disciples that
Dale Young:he sent out two by two at one point. Right, he had 12
Dale Young:apostles, but he had three in his inner circle. He had Peter,
Dale Young:James, and John in his inner circle, and so when you look at
Dale Young:that, well, who's in your inner circle, and how do you equate
Dale Young:that, and how do you get people into your inner circle? Maybe
Dale Young:you want them in, but they don't have enough time to be in there.
Dale Young:Okay, and maybe they're somebody that's already in the inner
Dale Young:circle or in the the the close friends, and they don't belong
Dale Young:there anymore. You know, maybe they've gone off the deep end
Dale Young:and whatever. You know, this is why a lot of times the online
Dale Young:romances that end up in marriage after two weeks or something
Dale Young:like that, you know they they just don't fit. You can't just
Dale Young:parachute somebody from the outside into the inner circle
Dale Young:type of thing, right? They have to kind of earn their way in on
Dale Young:the same way. You can't kick them all the way out either. You
Dale Young:have to kick them out layer by layer, so to speak. And so I'd
Dale Young:already been through a lot of that, but I've coached people
Dale Young:through. Okay, this person, you know, that you keep dealing
Dale Young:with, they're taking all your energy. They're an energy
Dale Young:vampire, right? And they're they're just sucking everything
Dale Young:from you. How are you going to get rid of them? How are you
Dale Young:going to set some boundaries and and really establish your own
Dale Young:your own framework for what's best for you, and that's a
Dale Young:that's a big issue for a lot of people. Is how do how do I how
Dale Young:do I stand up for myself?
Jennifer Takagi:I I yeah, and to that point, I am a big
Jennifer Takagi:follower of Brendon Burchard, and he talks about how you don't
Jennifer Takagi:necessarily have to cut people 100% out of your life, but you
Jennifer Takagi:might just choose to spend less time with them. And we're in
Jennifer Takagi:such a cancel culture these days that it's like, man, if you're
Jennifer Takagi:not building me up, I'm just gonna cut you out completely.
Jennifer Takagi:And we don't necessarily have to do that. We can just choose to
Jennifer Takagi:spend a little less time with those people, and and they might
Jennifer Takagi:get pushed all the way out to the very furthest, you know,
Jennifer Takagi:ring of the circle, but they might just need to take a step
Jennifer Takagi:or two back, right? Like just not quite as close because
Jennifer Takagi:they're not building you up the way you you want to be. So I
Jennifer Takagi:love that, and I loved your visual that you explained of
Jennifer Takagi:that inner circle. It's like, oh, I could just totally and
Jennifer Takagi:completely see that. So that was beautiful. I love that.
Dale Young:Well, I I think my brain thinks in terms of images,
Dale Young:and so whenever I'm coming up with something, I'd like to have
Dale Young:an analogy that makes all the pieces fit together, you know.
Dale Young:It's it's in that intersection again. You have to have road
Dale Young:signs in the intersection, right?
Jennifer Takagi:Like where people are going to come in and
Jennifer Takagi:where people are going to go out. So, as you have obviously
Jennifer Takagi:worked with lots of clients over the years, can you share like
Jennifer Takagi:one or two really big aha slash transformation moments that the
Jennifer Takagi:listers and I can really gravitate towards and go, yeah,
Jennifer Takagi:I that sounds like something I want to do.
Dale Young:Well, one of the things I've done a lot of work
Dale Young:with is helping people really understand their Clifton
Dale Young:strengths and the Clifton Strengths it has 34 talent
Dale Young:themes. I'm a Gallup certified coach and a Wheelline certified
Dale Young:coach and all that, but it's got 34 talent themes. And so, for
Dale Young:anybody to have the same top eight in the same order as you,
Dale Young:the chances are one in like seven and a half billion or
Dale Young:something like that, right? You know. So this actually is just
Dale Young:another thing that proves your uniqueness, right? But what we
Dale Young:found through a lot of the study and research and whatever is
Dale Young:that everybody has between eight and 15, eight and 16, what we
Dale Young:call signature talents, and a signature talent is one of those
Dale Young:that you can't turn off. It's just so much you that you can't
Dale Young:turn it off, right? And if you try and turn it off, it doesn't
Dale Young:work. And so I kind of equate that to your skin, right? You
Dale Young:you can't turn your skin off. It's always there. It's always
Dale Young:working. It's always holding you in. You know, always giving you
Dale Young:the vitamin D if you're in sunlight, all that sort of
Dale Young:stuff, right? And then there's another set of talents from
Dale Young:wherever signature cuts off down to the next break that we call
Dale Young:auxiliary, and auxiliary talents are like your clothes. Okay, you
Dale Young:can take them on, you can put them off. You can switch them
Dale Young:out. You know, if you're in winter time, you put on heavier
Dale Young:clothes. If you're on summer, you can put on lighter clothes.
Dale Young:All that sort of stuff. And then at the very bottom is the ones
Dale Young:that are just not you. Okay. For example, harmony is for me. I
Dale Young:don't do harmony well. I can get along with people, but I don't
Dale Young:like you know I don't mind rocking the boat. I don't mind
Dale Young:upsetting the status quo. I'm a rebel at heart in some ways, so
Dale Young:you know that's how it goes. Okay, but my number one is
Dale Young:strategic, and so I can see kind of the pattern and how to how to
Dale Young:get from point A to point B type of thing. Well, I've had several
Dale Young:of my clients. I actually I mentioned Sam earlier. You know,
Dale Young:that's when she really understood that she was working
Dale Young:against her talents. She was trying to get better at those
Dale Young:things that she was never going to be good at, and she started
Dale Young:focusing on her talents that were at the top, and that's when
Dale Young:the magic happened for her. I've got another talent. I've got
Dale Young:another guy, and these these are all stories straight out of the
Dale Young:book. I actually have four people in the book, but I've got
Dale Young:another guy, John, that's in the book, and he was he was a case
Dale Young:where he was building a business, he had one employee,
Dale Young:and he just wasn't sure that business was the right thing to
Dale Young:do. Okay, and the problem was that he was working down there
Dale Young:in those non-pattern talents. Okay, he was doing a lot of
Dale Young:analysis and a lot of putting reports together and all this
Dale Young:sort of stuff turned out that his employee could do that a lot
Dale Young:better and a lot faster than he could, and so we kind of equated
Dale Young:that. You know, well, those those non-pattern talents, those
Dale Young:are kind of like your off-season clothes, but they're stuck in
Dale Young:the storage. They're stuck in a locker in the storage building
Dale Young:five miles away. So every time you want to go do that analysis
Dale Young:for his case, he had to go down the road to the storage building
Dale Young:and unpack that trunk, right? And that just takes a lot of
Dale Young:energy and time, and it just takes that energy out of you at
Dale Young:the end of the day. Whereas if you're working in your top
Dale Young:talent strengths all the time, you're energized at the end of
Dale Young:the day. You may be physically tired, but you're energized, and
Dale Young:so a lot of what I write about in the book is how do you
Dale Young:monitor your energy? How do you pay attention to your energy
Dale Young:during the day? Because those are clues. Those are clues on
Dale Young:how how you get along with people. Another assessment that
Dale Young:I use is the Working Genius, for example.
Dale Young:That's from Patrick Lencioni, and that's a assessment that
Dale Young:tells you what kinds of work you like to do, how you like to
Dale Young:work, and that really plays well with the community aspect
Dale Young:because if you're working with a team of any sort, whether it's a
Dale Young:VA or you know you're just working with your clients or
Dale Young:whatever, you need to understand how they think about doing work.
Dale Young:Okay, that one only has six categories to it, so you get
Dale Young:doubles up quite often. But it's so easy and simple to understand
Dale Young:that it's really a worthwhile assessment. And so I've used
Dale Young:that with all of John's team now. By the way, John has now
Dale Young:tripled his business since I've been working with him. Not not
Dale Young:all due to me. He's he's a go-getter and doing everything.
Dale Young:But you know, I like to say I had a little piece of hand in
Dale Young:there, and but he's tripled his business. He's tripled his
Dale Young:employees, and he's now got some subcontractors working for him
Dale Young:as well, so you know. So he he says, "Well, I just you know, if
Dale Young:I see a case, if I see a case where I'm going down to the
Dale Young:storage building, I say, 'Okay, I don't need to be doing that.
Jennifer Takagi:I love that, and it's interesting because
Jennifer Takagi:sometimes we, when I was in the federal government and even
Jennifer Takagi:corporate work, I I had to do a lot of stuff that had nothing to
Jennifer Takagi:do with my gifts or talents, right? Like that was not part of
Jennifer Takagi:the equation. You had to do it anyway. And when I first left
Jennifer Takagi:the government, one of the first certifications I got was in DISC
Jennifer Takagi:behavioral profile, and it came out that I was 96 I, which is
Jennifer Takagi:influencing people. So of course you're going to be talking all
Jennifer Takagi:the time. You don't care about details, like all of that. My C
Jennifer Takagi:for compliance was eight, and the highest I've ever gotten in
Jennifer Takagi:that is eight out of 100. And she looked at me and she goes,
Jennifer Takagi:"How how did you survive in the housing industry, mortgage
Jennifer Takagi:banking, and federal government when like you have no follow the
Jennifer Takagi:rules, like you don't have any? And I was like, "Oh, my eye was
Jennifer Takagi:so high. I wanted the accolades. I wanted the award, so I would
Jennifer Takagi:do what I had to do, but when you talk about was it hard?
Jennifer Takagi:Yeah, it was hard. I mean, there some days were harder than
Jennifer Takagi:others, so it was super good to step out of that. And in in
Jennifer Takagi:StrengthsFinders, I think my number one is Woo, which is
Jennifer Takagi:hilarious because it like totally fits where I am now, but
Jennifer Takagi:not where I've ever
Unknown:been,
Jennifer Takagi:and. And communication and I think
Jennifer Takagi:relationships are all like in my top three, which just work
Jennifer Takagi:beautifully with my work today. So super fun how if if you get
Jennifer Takagi:into doing something where you can do more of what you love and
Jennifer Takagi:what you're naturally gifted at, the better it is. This has been
Jennifer Takagi:a great conversation. We're running out of time. Dale has an
Jennifer Takagi:awesome gift for you, so that you can do his assessment. How
Jennifer Takagi:do your spiritual gifts align with the work with you that you
Jennifer Takagi:do? That's coachdale.com forward slash first step. Coachdale.com
Jennifer Takagi:forward slash first step. This will be in the show notes with
Jennifer Takagi:the actual link with the HTTPS colon forward slash forward
Jennifer Takagi:slash in there, so that will be in the show notes and the link
Jennifer Takagi:to his book, all the links so you can you can find Dale all
Jennifer Takagi:the places. Dale, this has been great getting to know you and
Jennifer Takagi:hearing about your journey, and I will let you have final words
Jennifer Takagi:for the audience.
Dale Young:Well, I always go back to Stephen Covey and Seven
Dale Young:Habits. Start with end in mind, right? And if you're going to
Dale Young:start with end in mind, then what is your end result for your
Dale Young:life? What are you going to leave behind you? And you can
Dale Young:leave two things behind you. You can leave an inheritance, or you
Dale Young:can leave a legacy. Okay, what's the difference? An inheritance
Dale Young:is something, or you know, some something that you leave to
Dale Young:someone. A legacy is what you leave In someone,
Jennifer Takagi:ooh,
Dale Young:okay. So I always want you to ask the question. I
Dale Young:want people to think, what's the legacy that you're leaving at
Dale Young:the end of your life, and would you like it to make it better?
Jennifer Takagi:Oh, that's lovely. Thanks for being here
Jennifer Takagi:today, Dale. I'm Jennifer Takagi with Destin for Success, and I
Jennifer Takagi:look forward to connecting with you soon.
