When Symptoms Change: Brain Health, Hormones, and Small Steps with Dr. Shabnam Das Kar

When Symptoms Change: Brain Health, Hormones, and Small Steps with Dr. Shabnam Das Kar

Can a head injury be followed by changes that are easy to overlook, dismiss, or explain away?

In this conversation, Sandra Lee speaks with functional medicine physician Dr. Shabnam Das Kar about brain health, hormones, and the importance of noticing what may have changed after a fall, concussion, accident, or other health experience. They explore why concerns such as fatigue, changes in sleep, mood, memory, or focus may deserve attention rather than an immediate assumption that they are simply stress or part of getting older.

The conversation also looks beyond symptoms. Dr. Shabnam shares perspectives on sleep, food, movement, blood pressure, and other areas that may influence long-term brain health, while Sandra brings the discussion back to practical ways of becoming more aware of your own experience.

Perhaps most importantly, they explore what can happen when a desired change feels too big to begin. Through the Tiny Habits approach, Dr. Shabnam offers a different possibility: starting with an action small enough to fit the motivation and capacity you have today.

As you listen, consider: What change have you noticed in yourself that may be worth writing down, asking about, or approaching with one very small next step?

What You Are Invited to Discover:

  • The changes in memory, mood, sleep, energy, or focus that may be easier to explain away than explore.
  • A different way to consider the possible connection between brain health and hormones after a head injury.
  • The role that people close to you may play in noticing changes that are difficult to recognize in yourself.
  • Why knowing what may support your health is different from creating a change you can realistically sustain.
  • A surprisingly small way to begin when the action you want to take feels too difficult or overwhelming.

Sandra Lee has spent almost 40 years helping people feel and function better by addressing what standard treatment often misses: the unresolved trauma and emotional patterns stored in the body. She is the creator of The Spectrum of Anger™ and The Witnessed Body™, which integrates Intuitive Sound Healing and Combat Brain Training to support brain injury recovery, brain health, and dementia. Her work is grounded in the belief that symptoms are messages, not malfunctions, and that when those messages are finally received and released, the body can do what it already knows how to do.

Sandra Lee:

Welcome to Brain Health and Healing. I'm Sandra

Sandra Lee:

Lee. This show is for people living with head injuries and

Sandra Lee:

the families and supporters who love them. If you are ready to

Sandra Lee:

reclaim your life, identity, and dreams for the future, you are

Sandra Lee:

in the right place.

Sandra Lee:

Oh, welcome to Brain Health and Healing: Receiving Adversity's

Sandra Lee:

Gifts. I have a wonderful guest with me today. I am so excited.

Sandra Lee:

So, I love helping people with injuries to their brain if they

Sandra Lee:

have had falls or strokes or accidents, and actual tissue

Sandra Lee:

brain damage has occurred. I have an expert with me today who

Sandra Lee:

is an expert in not necessarily brain injury specifically, but

Sandra Lee:

how to recover whatever is going on with your brain, I have a

Sandra Lee:

functional medicine practitioner with me to talk with us about

Sandra Lee:

how do we support our brain in recovering from injury. How do

Sandra Lee:

we keep our brain healthy? So we have Dr. Shabnam Das Kaur. She

Sandra Lee:

is a functional medicine physician who helps people

Sandra Lee:

protect brain function before symptoms of cognitive decline

Sandra Lee:

appear. Her clinical work centers on better blood pressure

Sandra Lee:

management as the most powerful lever for brain health. Her

Sandra Lee:

primary training was as an obstetrician and gynecologist in

Sandra Lee:

Mumbai, India. Later, she moved into functional medicine full

Sandra Lee:

time. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Anti-Aging

Sandra Lee:

Medicine, holds brain health certification from Amon Clinics,

Sandra Lee:

and is trained in Dr. B. J. Fogg's behavior design. She

Sandra Lee:

divides her time between Alberta, Canada, and Mumbai,

Sandra Lee:

India. Welcome to the show, Dr. Shabnam.

Sandra Lee:

Dr. Shabnam Das Kar: Thank you, Sandra. It's a real pleasure

Sandra Lee:

being here with you.

Sandra Lee:

I met Dr. Shabnam at some place called the Healthy

Sandra Lee:

Neighborhoods Project, where I was talking about my work with

Sandra Lee:

helping the brain stay healthy and brain injury, and she is

Sandra Lee:

going to talk to us about something that I hadn't really

Sandra Lee:

heard about when it comes to recovery from brain injury.

Sandra Lee:

She's going to talk about hormones today.

Sandra Lee:

Dr. Shabnam Das Kar: Yes, so my background is as an OB/GY, and

Sandra Lee:

it was actually hormones which drew me to a fellowship in from

Sandra Lee:

the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, because I

Sandra Lee:

was at a conference and I was listening to somebody talking

Sandra Lee:

about you know hormones, and I thought this is a different way

Sandra Lee:

to think about hormones, and you know, Sandra, as you rightly

Sandra Lee:

pointed out, I don't actually work with people who have had

Sandra Lee:

brain trauma. But what was fascinating, and this was this

Sandra Lee:

came from my training from Dr. Yemen's clinic, was when he

Sandra Lee:

started talking about people who have had even what we would call

Sandra Lee:

minor traumatic brain injury like they have not had

Sandra Lee:

unconsciousness. They went to the ER and maybe they had some

Sandra Lee:

brain imaging which did not show anything, and so they were not

Sandra Lee:

seriously seriously ill. Like they were, they didn't lose

Sandra Lee:

their consciousness or anything. But when they went, they were

Sandra Lee:

sent home because there isn't a whole lot to do, but they

Sandra Lee:

realized that many of them started having symptoms. Now the

Sandra Lee:

problem is, you know, with a lot of these, so lots and lots of

Sandra Lee:

studies, and I'm sure we're going to post something in your

Sandra Lee:

show notes, have shown that people who have had brain

Sandra Lee:

injuries, regardless of how severe it was, like even those

Sandra Lee:

with mild traumatic brain injury can have hormone disruptions

Sandra Lee:

later on.

Sandra Lee:

Now the challenge, Sandra, is quite often these are missed

Sandra Lee:

because the symptoms are not like one specific symptom. If

Sandra Lee:

they are like specific symptoms, like excessive thirst or

Sandra Lee:

something, then they would be sort of like detected early. But

Sandra Lee:

symptoms can be things like you know fatigue, low mood, problems

Sandra Lee:

with sleep, and oh, it's just you just had a brain trauma, so

Sandra Lee:

you're going through all that. But sometimes it could be you

Sandra Lee:

know early flags for hormonal disruptions like thyroid

Sandra Lee:

hormones, or growth hormone, or you know there are some other

Sandra Lee:

hormones called antidiuretic hormones. Then for men it's

Sandra Lee:

testosterone, for women it could be the you know they could have

Sandra Lee:

irregular cycles. And as a former OB/GY one one thing I

Sandra Lee:

didn't. Back then, was sometimes it can cause problems of

Sandra Lee:

fertility, low libido, and I don't remember asking any of my

Sandra Lee:

OB/GY patients back when I was in Mumbai about whether they

Sandra Lee:

have ever had any head trauma when I was, you know, when they

Sandra Lee:

were talking about their infertility. So basically, what

Sandra Lee:

I want to suggest here is, if you are someone who's who's

Sandra Lee:

going through those symptoms, and again, Sandra, you know, I

Sandra Lee:

usually tell people that just because a particular symptom has

Sandra Lee:

not been listed in the doctor's list of symptoms, doesn't mean

Sandra Lee:

it's not related to whatever preceded it, and I usually ask

Sandra Lee:

them like, when do you think this started, and sometimes they

Sandra Lee:

oh yeah I think it started when I fell off that stool when I was

Sandra Lee:

trying to reach a higher shelf in my kitchen, and I thought it

Sandra Lee:

was not a big deal. And but now that you're asking me, I realize

Sandra Lee:

oh that was when a lot of my symptoms started.

Sandra Lee:

So first of all, is how you need to identify whether you are

Sandra Lee:

someone, and you by you I mean anyone who's dealing with any of

Sandra Lee:

these. Are you? Do you have any of those symptoms? And if you

Sandra Lee:

have those symptoms, sometimes your family doctor may not be

Sandra Lee:

aware that you know these hormonal problems can occur

Sandra Lee:

following a concussion or a mild traumatic brain injury, but you

Sandra Lee:

need to advocate for yourself, and you can ask your family

Sandra Lee:

doctor that you know this is what has happened to me, and I

Sandra Lee:

have read or again it depends. Andre, you know some people are,

Sandra Lee:

some doctors may be open to the suggestion, some may not, but

Sandra Lee:

they may say that okay, do you think, doctor, I should be

Sandra Lee:

screened for some hormonal problems? And once a hormonal

Sandra Lee:

problem is detected, very often it will need a specialist

Sandra Lee:

endocrinologist, or like it will need a specialist reference. And

Sandra Lee:

Sandra, you and I know how long it can take for someone to get

Sandra Lee:

an appointment. Oh my goodness! Yes. So, what it sounds like to

Sandra Lee:

me is that people just need to pay attention to any significant

Sandra Lee:

changes in symptoms all of the time. Yeah.

Sandra Lee:

Whether or not whether or not they've had an

Sandra Lee:

actual injury. Yeah. But to notice any time significant

Sandra Lee:

changes occur, and I know when it comes to talking with people

Sandra Lee:

about you know forgetting things and the potential for dementia,

Sandra Lee:

that when people have symptoms like starting to forget things,

Sandra Lee:

Dr. Shabnam Das Kar: yeah,

Sandra Lee:

or they don't want to go there.

Sandra Lee:

Dr. Shabnam Das Kar: Yeah,

Sandra Lee:

they are afraid of having this whole issue occur,

Sandra Lee:

and so they tend to pretend that the issue is not showing up.

Sandra Lee:

Dr. Shabnam Das Kar: Yeah, and the other thing, you know, and

Sandra Lee:

I'm guilty of it as well. So it doesn't mean that knowledge

Sandra Lee:

alone is going to prevent all whole lot of things happening.

Sandra Lee:

One thing I, after I became aware of my symptoms and I

Sandra Lee:

realized, so I had shortness of breath climbing a small little

Sandra Lee:

hill, and I thought, oh, I'm deconditioned. I should be

Sandra Lee:

working out more. I don't do that, and you know, I'm not

Sandra Lee:

walking as much because it's very hot. But then my doctor

Sandra Lee:

said, "No, you need a reference, you know, to the cardiologist.

Sandra Lee:

And the cardiologist tells me, "No, I need to investigate you

Sandra Lee:

for, you know. And I'm thinking, "How come I, being a doctor

Sandra Lee:

who's supposed to know all that, how come I was ignoring my

Sandra Lee:

symptoms? But anyway, turned out to be not to be a hard problem.

Sandra Lee:

But you see how we tend to. So this is the cognitive biases

Sandra Lee:

humans have, where bad things happen to other people, they

Sandra Lee:

don't happen to me. It's like, oh, I can't remember where I

Sandra Lee:

left my keys. This is quite normal, and you know, I was

Sandra Lee:

unmindful. Sometimes that is the truth. But the thing is, any

Sandra Lee:

symptom one is we should not ignore them, and second is

Sandra Lee:

sometimes this is what many of us are guilty of. It's trying to

Sandra Lee:

justify it as, oh, it's just sleep. Oh, it's like I'm

Sandra Lee:

stressed. I have so many things I'm dealing with. I'm taking

Sandra Lee:

care of older parents. My kids are, you know, going off to

Sandra Lee:

college now, and blah blah blah blah blah. We try to justify

Sandra Lee:

many things, and sometimes it's doctors who tell the patient,

Sandra Lee:

"You just have a lot of stress in your life. Now, Sandro, who

Sandra Lee:

doesn't have stress in their lives? We all do, right? I know.

Sandra Lee:

So, first of all, I think I would say that don't dismiss any

Sandra Lee:

symptoms that are new. Find out if it if it is not anything

Sandra Lee:

serious, fantastic, well and good. But what if it is

Sandra Lee:

something you can do something about? So I like to give people

Sandra Lee:

practical strategies

Sandra Lee:

to take, so that we want them to remember this and

Sandra Lee:

write it down. Yeah. So it sounds to me like a first

Sandra Lee:

practical strategy is. To pay attention all of the time,

Sandra Lee:

Dr. Shabnam Das Kar: yes,

Sandra Lee:

to how you feel and notice any significant changes

Sandra Lee:

or any slow creeping changes as well that are gradually getting

Sandra Lee:

worse. And instead of you know saying, "Oh, it's nothing, write

Sandra Lee:

it down,

Sandra Lee:

Dr. Shabnam Das Kar: yeah.

Sandra Lee:

And it doesn't mean, oh, I'm going to go do. It was

Sandra Lee:

like, oh, I'm noticing. I'm having a hard time forgetting,

Sandra Lee:

or I'm having a harder time staying awake at night, or you

Sandra Lee:

know, I'm having a hard time waking up in the morning, or

Sandra Lee:

whatever it is to notice it, and then at some point it's like,

Sandra Lee:

oh, maybe I really need to deal with this, yeah. And then go

Sandra Lee:

through the process of you know calling the doctor and making an

Sandra Lee:

appointment, and you know, like we were talking about, sometimes

Sandra Lee:

getting the appointment can take some time. Yeah. So to you know

Sandra Lee:

have the process already running, you know, before it

Sandra Lee:

gets significantly worse.

Sandra Lee:

Dr. Shabnam Das Kar: Yeah. Another thing, Sandra, I want to

Sandra Lee:

point out is because the brain kind of not kind of actually

Sandra Lee:

controls almost everything we do. So sometimes it is hard to

Sandra Lee:

be objective about the brain. So I also tell people that you know

Sandra Lee:

what? Have your loved ones, or your friends, or your

Sandra Lee:

colleagues, people who meet you quite often, have they been

Sandra Lee:

saying something? And sometimes you won't believe Sandra. When I

Sandra Lee:

have, like, let's say it's a couple, and the wife is

Sandra Lee:

concerned about the husband's challenges because he seems to

Sandra Lee:

get lost while driving, and she is volunteering to drive, and

Sandra Lee:

she says, "You know, he just wouldn't agree with me. And here

Sandra Lee:

I am thinking, and he says, "I don't have a problem. Sometimes

Sandra Lee:

it is people who are close to you who notice. Sometimes it may

Sandra Lee:

be a colleague who notices that you are missing appointments,

Sandra Lee:

you are missing meetings, or you show up late, and they may not

Sandra Lee:

tell you, but I think it's also important for us to ask. You

Sandra Lee:

know, have you noticed anything different about me? Because

Sandra Lee:

sometimes people won't won't tell someone. You know, you are

Sandra Lee:

you're not doing this. You know, and particularly family members.

Sandra Lee:

Like I have noticed time and time again. Sometimes it is

Sandra Lee:

adult kids who notice that. Oh, you know my father or my mother

Sandra Lee:

is not what she was even a year ago, and the father and the

Sandra Lee:

mother whoever it is think I'm fine.

Sandra Lee:

I know an issue that people run into when it comes to

Sandra Lee:

that is fear of conflict,

Sandra Lee:

Dr. Shabnam Das Kar: yeah, fear

Sandra Lee:

of making somebody upset, and and and all of these

Sandra Lee:

interpersonal related things, and so just think about

Sandra Lee:

listening to this conversation that Dr. Shabnam and I are

Sandra Lee:

having is a little bit of permission for you if you find

Sandra Lee:

yourself in this situation on either side, either the person

Sandra Lee:

who is behavior is changing or is not going, or being a family

Sandra Lee:

member or a friend, to realize this is significant stuff when

Sandra Lee:

it comes to the health of your brain, and like Dr. Shum said,

Sandra Lee:

everything that the brain controls. Yeah, so it's like,

Sandra Lee:

oh, I heard that podcast, and that functional medicine doctor

Sandra Lee:

was saying to say something, and so to help you get over that

Sandra Lee:

little hurdle, because I know, I mean, I have this whole fear

Sandra Lee:

about bothering people and all this stuff, and oh, a doctor

Sandra Lee:

actually said I should say something. So to to give you

Sandra Lee:

that little bit of a nudge to either ask for that. Oh, have

Sandra Lee:

you noticed anything about me?

Sandra Lee:

Dr. Shabnam Das Kar: Yeah.

Sandra Lee:

Or if you have a loved person who is showing

Sandra Lee:

these signs to you know just work up that little bit of

Sandra Lee:

courage to actually say something.

Sandra Lee:

Dr. Shabnam Das Kar: Yeah, absolutely. And I think Sandra,

Sandra Lee:

another thing again, as I get older, I guess I'm noticing it

Sandra Lee:

is sometimes we don't we are suspecting something. We are

Sandra Lee:

kind of like, okay, I my memory is not what it was. I'm

Sandra Lee:

forgetting things that I wasn't. But I don't want to know. I have

Sandra Lee:

dementia.

Sandra Lee:

Yes.

Sandra Lee:

Dr. Shabnam Das Kar: But my point is, regardless of what

Sandra Lee:

your symptoms are, and even if you have, if someone has early

Sandra Lee:

cognitive decline, there are always, always, always things to

Sandra Lee:

do that can help your symptom, that can you know maybe it will

Sandra Lee:

reduce your symptoms. It can even prevent dementia. So this

Sandra Lee:

is one something that I always protest against. Is when

Sandra Lee:

sometimes doctors will tell patients, "Oh, you have a

Sandra Lee:

diagnosis of dementia." And you don't qualify for a medication.

Sandra Lee:

There's nothing much you can do. I disagree with that completely.

Sandra Lee:

There is so much you can do.

Sandra Lee:

Yes. So here on Brain Health and Healing, people

Sandra Lee:

are accustomed to hearing me say, "Your brain heals itself

Sandra Lee:

every day of your life.

Sandra Lee:

Dr. Shabnam Das Kar: Yes, you have to give it the opportunity

Sandra Lee:

and the resources for it to heal.

Sandra Lee:

So, tell us more about hormones and how we

Sandra Lee:

support our brain in taking care of itself with hormones.

Sandra Lee:

Dr. Shabnam Das Kar: So, hormones now again. First of

Sandra Lee:

all, as an individual, a person cannot do much about hormones

Sandra Lee:

other than making sure they get the right diagnosis, so there

Sandra Lee:

are no like you'll hear Sandra. I'm sure you hear as much as I

Sandra Lee:

do about natural hormone treatments. Well, there are no

Sandra Lee:

natural hormone treatments like no supplement that is going to

Sandra Lee:

increase someone's level of let's say testosterone or

Sandra Lee:

estrogen or anything in a let's say a postmenopausal woman is

Sandra Lee:

going to take some supplement which is going to increase her

Sandra Lee:

hormone levels. Now that doesn't exist, so a lot of it is

Sandra Lee:

prescription stuff. But what are the things that you know any one

Sandra Lee:

of us can do in terms of? So I use what I call my eight keys to

Sandra Lee:

long term health. Most of the keys, I'm sure, everyone, most

Sandra Lee:

people are familiar with sleep. Now, with sleep, what happens,

Sandra Lee:

and and I'm sure you have a lot of clients who have sleep issues

Sandra Lee:

after their trauma, the brain trauma. So sometimes, what gets

Sandra Lee:

missed is, particularly in women, it could be a combination

Sandra Lee:

of things like, in menopause, one of the commonest problems is

Sandra Lee:

chronic insomnia, and chronic insomnia cannot be treated by

Sandra Lee:

pills. It needs something called cognitive behavioral therapy for

Sandra Lee:

insomnia, which is a non-prescription medication

Sandra Lee:

treatment, which is again not easily available because it's

Sandra Lee:

usually delivered by sleep coaches or psychologists.

Sandra Lee:

But it's good to know because some people can also do

Sandra Lee:

self-paced courses and all that. So cognitive behavioral therapy

Sandra Lee:

for insomnia is very important. Then some people may have what

Sandra Lee:

is called obstructive sleep apnea, and that may have no

Sandra Lee:

relation to the brain trauma, but they can have it anyway. So

Sandra Lee:

what happens is during sleep, the brain doesn't get enough

Sandra Lee:

oxygen. We stop breathing in between, and for men, sometimes

Sandra Lee:

their you know partners or wives may notice at night like they're

Sandra Lee:

giving a jab, jabbing him in the ribs because he just stops

Sandra Lee:

breathing. But for women, sometimes the symptoms are not

Sandra Lee:

really related to breathing. It may be things like anxiety,

Sandra Lee:

hallucinations, and sometimes they are told, "Oh, you're in

Sandra Lee:

menopause, so this is the problem. But the problem is

Sandra Lee:

actually sleep apnea, and to diagnose that, they again have

Sandra Lee:

to go for a sleep study, and that is the only way to confirm

Sandra Lee:

whether someone has or doesn't have it. So these are the two

Sandra Lee:

things about sleep that people don't talk a lot about, you

Sandra Lee:

know. Then food. Now there are no, you know, magic brain food.

Sandra Lee:

That if I if I just eat blueberries, I'm my brain is

Sandra Lee:

going to be great. Sandra, I can see you agreeing to that.

Sandra Lee:

Rats. There's not a magical food that's gonna solve

Sandra Lee:

all my problems. Ah,

Sandra Lee:

Dr. Shabnam Das Kar: no. So when it comes to food, I talk about

Sandra Lee:

you know what are the jobs you want food to do for your brain.

Sandra Lee:

So I look at it as number one is does it maintain your blood

Sandra Lee:

glucose levels in a constant level state? There is a very

Sandra Lee:

strict range which is good for the brain, and this is good for

Sandra Lee:

all brains, regardless of whether someone has a brain

Sandra Lee:

trauma, someone has diabetes, someone has a family history of

Sandra Lee:

dementia. Doesn't matter for everyone. This applies. It

Sandra Lee:

applies to mood disorders too. Then the next thing is: is it

Sandra Lee:

keeping inflammation? Chronic inflammation is a very big

Sandra Lee:

problem. Chronic inflammation is like a smoldering fire where the

Sandra Lee:

immune system is on a constant, you know, alert when it doesn't

Sandra Lee:

need to be. Like there is no bacteria it's dealing with,

Sandra Lee:

there is no virus it's dealing with at that point. But it's in

Sandra Lee:

the past something might have happened, and there are

Sandra Lee:

gazillions of things which can trigger a chronic inflammation.

Sandra Lee:

Food is one of the big ones. Now, I don't need to. Your

Sandra Lee:

audience, I'm sure, knows very well that you know ultra

Sandra Lee:

processed food like a lot of sugary food, pop, and you know

Sandra Lee:

high carbohydrate food, pizzas, burgers, all the stuff, cakes

Sandra Lee:

and pastries and cookies; those are not good for anyone's brain,

Sandra Lee:

regardless of whether they've had trauma or not. So that is

Sandra Lee:

that is not new information. Everyone knows. But the thing

Sandra Lee:

is, what would be good for the brain?

Sandra Lee:

Things like having high quality protein, because proteins don't

Sandra Lee:

raise blood glucose levels as much as. Carbohydrates do so

Sandra Lee:

proteins, as in depending on whether you're vegetarian,

Sandra Lee:

vegan, or you eat so meat, fish, eggs, tofu. Those are you know

Sandra Lee:

high quality protein and eat them as far as possible in the

Sandra Lee:

least like processed way. So for example, if someone has to

Sandra Lee:

choose between I'm from Alberta, so a wonderful, nice, juicy

Sandra Lee:

steak and sausages. I would much rather they choose the steak.

Sandra Lee:

But then again, Sandra, it's not always practical to have

Sandra Lee:

sausages, you know, every week. I mean, sorry, steaks every

Sandra Lee:

week. But if someone has to choose between, let us say, a

Sandra Lee:

sausage and a sandwich, then I'd much rather go for the sausage.

Sandra Lee:

So here are the decisions: like what what are the most important

Sandra Lee:

you know things that you need to do for yourself? So proteins and

Sandra Lee:

good quality fat. So good quality fat, as in things like

Sandra Lee:

nuts or natural you know fatty fish or things like avocado. The

Sandra Lee:

worst possible fat are trans fats. Those are the processed

Sandra Lee:

food, the things that processed food contain. And again, another

Sandra Lee:

you know something you'll find people.

Sandra Lee:

Oh, you need to eat fish for the brain. Well, yes, you need to

Sandra Lee:

eat fish for sure, but maybe you don't love fish. You don't like

Sandra Lee:

fish at all, but expecting yourself to get enough omega

Sandra Lee:

three to help your brain from eating only two helpings of

Sandra Lee:

fatty fish a week, it's not going to work. So people can

Sandra Lee:

actually test for omega three levels, and again, the test is

Sandra Lee:

not available through healthcare. It's a specialized

Sandra Lee:

testing, but most people would need supplements. You cannot. No

Sandra Lee:

one can eat their way to have omega threes. So what else can

Sandra Lee:

people do now? Exercise. Everybody knows, Sandra. We all

Sandra Lee:

know that exercise is good for us. But how many of us actually

Sandra Lee:

manage to meet what you know the guidelines recommend. I'm sure

Sandra Lee:

you you meet such. I am not someone who meets the

Sandra Lee:

requirements either. I

Sandra Lee:

don't.

Sandra Lee:

Dr. Shabnam Das Kar: And Canada has a very nice you know

Sandra Lee:

guideline which is called the 24 Hour Movement Guideline, and

Sandra Lee:

that is very important. You know why? Because a lot of time we

Sandra Lee:

spend in sitting continuously. So right now I'm standing. So I

Sandra Lee:

have a sit-stand desk which I can adjust. And if you are using

Sandra Lee:

a standing desk, I always recommend people get a thick

Sandra Lee:

rubber mat, like an anti-fatigue mat, because you can't stand for

Sandra Lee:

two. And you should. No one should be standing all the time.

Sandra Lee:

So again, this is my you know behavior change and tiny habits

Sandra Lee:

method is your environment has the biggest impact on your

Sandra Lee:

behavior. So when I decided I'm going to you know stand for my

Sandra Lee:

meetings and Zoom calls and when I see patients, I decided to get

Sandra Lee:

out of the chair in my office. You know, because the chair is

Sandra Lee:

not there, I'm not like I won't be inclined to sit. Then I

Sandra Lee:

realized my husband likes to sit when he's here at the table, so

Sandra Lee:

I thought, "Oh, what do I do now? Because I can see the

Sandra Lee:

chair, so I decided to push the chair under the table so that

Sandra Lee:

it's not in my vision, so that he can pull it out when he wants

Sandra Lee:

to sit, but I don't have to see it. And if I don't see it, very

Sandra Lee:

unlikely I won't use it.

Sandra Lee:

So, how do we set ourselves for success? You know, environment

Sandra Lee:

is one of the biggest one, but sometimes we may not be able to

Sandra Lee:

change our environment completely. So, food we talked

Sandra Lee:

about, then exercise. Now, when it comes to exercise, what I

Sandra Lee:

want to highlight is, you know, reducing Continuous sitting,

Sandra Lee:

like yesterday or day, I was reading about you know people

Sandra Lee:

talking about the number of hours of television viewing. A

Sandra Lee:

lot of people you know do because number one is they are

Sandra Lee:

bored, they don't have anything else to do, they are retired,

Sandra Lee:

and apparently some statistics say like people are spending

Sandra Lee:

about three to four hours a day watching TV. So I ask my

Sandra Lee:

patients sometimes, you know, what do you do at this between

Sandra Lee:

this time and this time? Where does most of your sitting come

Sandra Lee:

from? And they'll say, Oh, I watch. I said, Okay, can you?

Sandra Lee:

They'll say, Okay, I have a treadmill in the house, but I'm

Sandra Lee:

not using it.

Sandra Lee:

Said, Can you move it to the front of the TV? Like, you know,

Sandra Lee:

watch your favorite show, and you can be on your treadmill

Sandra Lee:

while you're doing that instead of sitting at the you know on

Sandra Lee:

the couch. So so many different ways of doing this. Then another

Sandra Lee:

one of my other keys is taking appropriate prescription

Sandra Lee:

medications. That is where my interest in hypertension comes

Sandra Lee:

in. Many people, because hypertension often doesn't have

Sandra Lee:

any symptoms, so they think, "Oh, it doesn't have any

Sandra Lee:

symptoms. I'm young. It's not my problem. I'm in my 30s and 40s

Sandra Lee:

now. This is something my grandparents dealt with. No,

Sandra Lee:

your midlife health will decide your long-term health. So write

Sandra Lee:

prescription medications. Then, of course, there are

Sandra Lee:

supplementation things like omega three fatty acids, vitamin

Sandra Lee:

D. We cannot get enough vitamin D from you know, and

Sandra Lee:

particularly in northern areas like Canada, we're not going to.

Sandra Lee:

And my skin color, there's no chance I'm going to make vitamin

Sandra Lee:

D.

Sandra Lee:

So, Dr. Shabnam has given us a wide range of

Sandra Lee:

practical actions to take that support general health, that

Sandra Lee:

support hormone health, and that support recovery from whatever

Sandra Lee:

it is that's not working properly about your brain. Now,

Sandra Lee:

I think Dr. Shabnam and I are probably going to be doing

Sandra Lee:

several of these podcast interviews because she's got so

Sandra Lee:

much wisdom to share. So let's give us a quick conclusion for

Sandra Lee:

people to take away with what we've already talked about.

Sandra Lee:

Dr. Shabnam Das Kar: Yeah. So first of all, observe for any

Sandra Lee:

symptoms that you didn't have before, and more importantly,

Sandra Lee:

don't ignore any symptom that you like. One of the things I

Sandra Lee:

ask people when it comes to brain, because a lot of people

Sandra Lee:

come to me like, doctor, I don't want to get dementia when I'm

Sandra Lee:

older, so I'll ask them. Do you feel your brain is as rapid fire

Sandra Lee:

as it was before? And 100% of the time, it's like, no, I want

Sandra Lee:

a brain upgrade. You know, so are you having things like mood

Sandra Lee:

issues? You're not sleeping well, or you know, you have

Sandra Lee:

fatigue. These are new things. Or did you notice anything

Sandra Lee:

change after, let's say, a minor trauma? Minor, you fell off a

Sandra Lee:

stool, reaching out for a shelf in the upper this thing in your

Sandra Lee:

kitchen, or ask your loved ones that we know Sandra and I talked

Sandra Lee:

about. Are you noticing something different in me? That

Sandra Lee:

is one. Next is whatever the symptom is, regardless. Like you

Sandra Lee:

know, don't judge. Like don't try to sort of justify. Yeah,

Sandra Lee:

this is what happened. I'm stressed. I'm not sleeping well.

Sandra Lee:

That is why I have this symptom.

Sandra Lee:

Best to confirm. You know, sometimes some of the early

Sandra Lee:

symptoms can you know we can catch them early enough. Then we

Sandra Lee:

can treat much better. Next is what are the things you can do

Sandra Lee:

for yourself. So no matter how severe a health challenge you're

Sandra Lee:

dealing with, what I would suggest is make a written down

Sandra Lee:

list of all the things. Like most people know, you know,

Sandra Lee:

quite a some people may not know everything, but then they might

Sandra Lee:

know that okay, it's like yesterday I was talking to a

Sandra Lee:

relative, and she and her husband have diabetes, and she

Sandra Lee:

said, "Oh, I use a few dates in my morning smoothie, and I'm

Sandra Lee:

like my eyes are almost reaching my. Said, "Why are you having

Sandra Lee:

dates? No, people say it's good for the brain. I said, "No,

Sandra Lee:

that's sugar. Sugar in any form, whether it is natural or not, is

Sandra Lee:

not the best thing for your brain, and particularly for

Sandra Lee:

someone who has diabetes. So yes, information alone does not

Sandra Lee:

change behavior, but right information is important. And

Sandra Lee:

like Sandra and I said, there are no magic food or magic

Sandra Lee:

supplements. Just have blueberries, or just have fatty

Sandra Lee:

fish, and your brain's going to be good. No, so write

Sandra Lee:

information, and the other thing is make a list of all the

Sandra Lee:

changes that you probably want to make. So let us say you want

Sandra Lee:

to start exercising. So instead of you know going and signing up

Sandra Lee:

for a gym, you've not worked out for the last five years. Like is

Sandra Lee:

that something you see yourself doing? Yes, the impact of going

Sandra Lee:

to the gym would be fantastic.

Sandra Lee:

But do you have the motivation right now? So, as a tiny habits

Sandra Lee:

coach, I would say match your, you know, whatever it is, the

Sandra Lee:

outcome you're looking for. Match it to your present

Sandra Lee:

motivation level. If you've not worked out for the last five

Sandra Lee:

years, like don't set yourself up for failure. Start with

Sandra Lee:

something small. So start a tiny habit like I'm going to walk to

Sandra Lee:

the mailbox every day. You know something, or even smaller.

Sandra Lee:

Actually, in the tiny habits method, we say start with

Sandra Lee:

something as simple as I'm going to take out my you know walking

Sandra Lee:

shoes. Maybe my walking shoes are packed away in the basement,

Sandra Lee:

so I'm just going to take them out, or maybe I'll just put them

Sandra Lee:

on and tie the shoelace. Very often, people find that once

Sandra Lee:

they do that, they usually end up going out for the walk. But

Sandra Lee:

the third part of the tiny habits method. So first of all,

Sandra Lee:

anchor it to something you already do. So let's say after I

Sandra Lee:

put away my coffee cup in the morning, I'm going to you know

Sandra Lee:

put on my shoes. But the third part of the tiny habit recipe,

Sandra Lee:

and this is a method that comes from the work of Dr. B. J. Fogg

Sandra Lee:

at Stanford. The third part is the part that a lot of people

Sandra Lee:

miss is an instant celebration. So an instant celebration. There

Sandra Lee:

are long list of things you can do. Something like, okay, I tied

Sandra Lee:

my shoelace today, so Yahoo. You know, depending on your

Sandra Lee:

personality, I'm not a Yahoo kind of person.

Sandra Lee:

I would think of something like imaginary fireworks or something

Sandra Lee:

that is meaningful to you. And what happens is most people

Sandra Lee:

don't get this right. They feel that oh, it's so tiny. I'm just

Sandra Lee:

putting on a putting on my shoes. How is that going to help

Sandra Lee:

me? You know, exercise. No, that feeling when you celebrate that

Sandra Lee:

feeling of you know that you feel good about it that

Sandra Lee:

increases your motivation for doing something more difficult.

Sandra Lee:

And don't raise the bar like the tiny habit remains that tiny,

Sandra Lee:

but you will find, and I have seen it in myself. I have seen

Sandra Lee:

it in a lot of people I have helped. That once they are

Sandra Lee:

successful in doing something really tiny, and I think Sandra,

Sandra Lee:

for many of your clients who are dealing with you know severe

Sandra Lee:

brain trauma, like doing something really tiny, like I'm

Sandra Lee:

going to do two dumbbell curls, like two dumbbell curls with a

Sandra Lee:

two-pound weight, is absolutely. I mean, it's like you're going

Sandra Lee:

to think, how is that going to impact? But you'll be surprised

Sandra Lee:

to see really big deal. Yes, it's like it just it increases

Sandra Lee:

on its own. There is nobody telling them do it, do it, do

Sandra Lee:

it. You know, no notification on the phone prompting them, oh,

Sandra Lee:

you need to do this, but this is how you know. This is why the

Sandra Lee:

tiny habits method and behavior design.

Sandra Lee:

All of this. First of all, make a list of everything that you

Sandra Lee:

are. You know, this is the desired outcome. Let us say

Sandra Lee:

someone wants to improve focus. What are the things you can do?

Sandra Lee:

And they can actually talk to you because you help people with

Sandra Lee:

that wonderful test. Yes. Yes. Yes. So Sandra has this really

Sandra Lee:

nice test, and we all went through this testing on that on

Sandra Lee:

that webinar. And it's surprising how quickly people

Sandra Lee:

can actually improve on that. And doing something like that,

Sandra Lee:

you know, doing that test and improving, seeing your scores

Sandra Lee:

improve, that gives a wonderful feeling to people. So make a

Sandra Lee:

list of all the things that you. What is the desired outcome? If

Sandra Lee:

it is focus, what are the things that can improve focus? And out

Sandra Lee:

of that list, I would say people should choose things that one

Sandra Lee:

has a high impact on the outcome they are looking for, and the

Sandra Lee:

second, which is the part that a lot of people, you know, miss

Sandra Lee:

out? Is do you see yourself doing it? Actually doing it.

Sandra Lee:

Yes. And if you if it doesn't happen, doesn't matter. This was

Sandra Lee:

a self experiment. It didn't work. Try something else.

Sandra Lee:

And you know what I say is, if you don't do it this

Sandra Lee:

time, there's always tomorrow. Oh

Sandra Lee:

Dr. Shabnam Das Kar: yeah,

Sandra Lee:

yeah. Well, so thank you, Doctor Shabnam. This has

Sandra Lee:

been so full of practical strategies. What do you have as

Sandra Lee:

a gift for people?

Sandra Lee:

Dr. Shabnam Das Kar: Okay, so I have a weekly email which I talk

Sandra Lee:

about brain health in general, or just health in general,

Sandra Lee:

specifically brain and blood pressure, and people can. It's a

Sandra Lee:

free email, so people can sign up on my website. So drcarmd.com

Sandra Lee:

forward slash email, d r k a r md.com/e and you'll find a form

Sandra Lee:

to give in your name and your email address, and you get to

Sandra Lee:

down people get

Sandra Lee:

to download a free book called 20 Myths About Brain

Sandra Lee:

Health, where you know there are 20 things that people can, and

Sandra Lee:

each of those can actually become like something you want

Sandra Lee:

to implement? Yes, and that will be in the show notes. Yes. So,

Sandra Lee:

and I also have a brain podcast with my co-host Andrea. So it's

Sandra Lee:

all there on my website. Yeah, we are not as regular with the

Sandra Lee:

you know with publishing episodes as we should be, but I

Sandra Lee:

mean it's there. It will all be in the show notes. So thank you

Sandra Lee:

so much, Dr. Shabnam, and for you listening, you have lots of

Sandra Lee:

wonderful practical things to write down in your notes so you

Sandra Lee:

can apply them to your life. Thank you so much for coming to

Sandra Lee:

Brain Health and Healing. We will see you next time. Thank

Sandra Lee:

you very much, Sandra. Thank you, everyone.

Sandra Lee:

Isn't that wonderful having a functional medicine practitioner

Sandra Lee:

come on and give us practical strategies for supporting brain

Sandra Lee:

health? Dr. Shabnam is going to be on again with us in the

Sandra Lee:

future to have us have more strategies for supporting our

Sandra Lee:

brains. What did you learn today? What did you write down
