The Beliefs You Carry: How to Move Forward After Adversity

The Beliefs You Carry: How to Move Forward After Adversity

How can limiting beliefs and adversity shape the way you see yourself, your brain health, and what may still be possible?

In this foundational episode of Brain Health & Healing, Sandra Lee explores the idea of receiving adversity’s gifts—not by dismissing the difficulty of what you have lived through, but by becoming curious about what those experiences may have shaped within you.

Drawing from her own early belief that she was a bad person who hurt others, Sandra reflects on the limiting beliefs people can carry for years without realizing where they began. She considers the connection between those beliefs, the ways we use our brains, and the choices we make when life feels difficult or the road ahead seems endless.

Sandra also expands the conversation beyond physical brain injuries to what she calls “thought injuries” and “belief injuries,” offering this language as her own way of exploring mental and emotional limitations.

Rather than allowing adversity to become the whole story, this episode invites another question: could something meaningful eventually be received from what you have endured?

What belief about yourself might be worth becoming curious about—and what could open if you no longer assumed it had to define what comes next?

About the Host:

Sandra Lee has spent almost 40 years helping people feel and function better by addressing what standard treatment often misses: the unresolved trauma and emotional patterns stored in the body. She is the creator of The Spectrum of Anger™ and The Witnessed Body™, which integrates Intuitive Sound Healing and Combat Brain Training to support brain injury recovery, brain health, and dementia. Her work is grounded in the belief that symptoms are messages, not malfunctions, and that when those messages are finally received and released, the body can do what it already knows how to do.

Sandra Lee:

Welcome to Brain Health and Healing. I'm Sandra

Sandra Lee:

Lee. This show is for people living with head injuries and

Sandra Lee:

the families and supporters who love them. If you are ready to

Sandra Lee:

reclaim your life, identity, and dreams for the future, you are

Sandra Lee:

in the right place. This is a foundational concepts episode

Sandra Lee:

about receiving adversity's gifts. I am here speaking to you

Sandra Lee:

because I used to be absolutely certain that I was bad and I

Sandra Lee:

hurt people. Today, I'm talking about receiving adversity's

Sandra Lee:

gifts. Receiving adversity's gifts is part of the name of the

Sandra Lee:

Brain Health and Healing Show for a reason. This is another

Sandra Lee:

foundational concepts episode. When you hit times where life's

Sandra Lee:

kicked you down and the road seems endless, come back and

Sandra Lee:

listen again. Last week I shared about being in so much pain. I

Sandra Lee:

pushed with my arms to roll out of bed, and I was so miserable

Sandra Lee:

about who I am that I wanted to die. If you didn't hear it, go

Sandra Lee:

back and listen. You've heard your mess becomes your message.

Sandra Lee:

Well, it's true. That belief I started with today-I'm bad and I

Sandra Lee:

hurt people. From very early in life until I began learning

Sandra Lee:

healing techniques in my 20s, I thought I was the worst, most

Sandra Lee:

horrible person in the world. I remember hearing somewhere when

Sandra Lee:

I was young, "Nobody likes me. Everybody hates me. I'm going to

Sandra Lee:

eat some worms. I don't know how many times I repeated that when

Sandra Lee:

I was school-aged and older.

Sandra Lee:

The reality is that all of these beliefs originated from a

Sandra Lee:

completely normal, even advantaged childhood. There was

Sandra Lee:

no abuse in my family, and we had everything we needed. Yet I

Sandra Lee:

came away with a heavy load on my back of limiting beliefs,

Sandra Lee:

there was a specific event that started these beliefs for me.

Sandra Lee:

I'll share that story another time. I believe it's essentially

Sandra Lee:

normal for people to come away with these sorts of limiting

Sandra Lee:

beliefs and experiences. Pretty much everyone experiences them.

Sandra Lee:

Today's message is about receiving adversity's gifts. As

Sandra Lee:

a practitioner of first a different modality and now of

Sandra Lee:

neurolinguistic programming, I've realized that almost every

Sandra Lee:

person has their version of very similar limiting beliefs, and

Sandra Lee:

when I share from my experience, other people can relate to it.

Sandra Lee:

Sharing my stories helps other people take steps on their own

Sandra Lee:

healing paths. When I look for the gift of the silver lining

Sandra Lee:

and give it away, everyone has more hope. Everyone wins. People

Sandra Lee:

with brain injuries following accidents, falls, and strokes

Sandra Lee:

certainly experience tremendous adversity. Some of those

Sandra Lee:

individuals get stuck in their circumstances.

Sandra Lee:

They lose hope and stop trying to heal. They learn to live with

Sandra Lee:

their limitations and stop believing anything else is

Sandra Lee:

possible. I send these people love and prayers, and I say to

Sandra Lee:

them, "Your brain heals itself every day of your life. What

Sandra Lee:

these people face is tremendous adversity, and I understand how

Sandra Lee:

they get to this place. Were I faced with their circumstances,

Sandra Lee:

I might give up too. God grant me the blessings to stay safely

Sandra Lee:

away from such injuries that would lead me to such a place.

Sandra Lee:

Then there are people who experience devastating brain

Sandra Lee:

injuries and become determined and do whatever it takes to

Sandra Lee:

recover. They never give up, despite what the doctors say

Sandra Lee:

about this. Is all we can do? You need to get used to it.

Sandra Lee:

These are the people who keep on going and get better.

Sandra Lee:

Frequently, these extraordinary individuals share their stories

Sandra Lee:

with the world, becoming people who inspire us, showing what's

Sandra Lee:

possible when we refuse to allow adversity to get in the way. I'm

Sandra Lee:

honored that some of Brain Health and Healing's first

Sandra Lee:

guests will share stories like these. Whether or not they have

Sandra Lee:

overcome physical body limitations, everyone has

Sandra Lee:

stories of adversity to share, and those experiences contribute

Sandra Lee:

to the value they deliver to the world. Many. Brain health and

Sandra Lee:

healing guests will be business owners, sharing their journeys

Sandra Lee:

and how they took life's lessons and turned them into their

Sandra Lee:

unique and valuable contributions to the world,

Sandra Lee:

providing us all with the benefits of the wisdom they've

Sandra Lee:

gained. It's obvious to call it a brain injury when I've been in

Sandra Lee:

an accident or fallen, and I can't think properly, or I can't

Sandra Lee:

walk, or I can't walk or speak, that truly is devastating.

Sandra Lee:

For the purposes of this show, I also look at mental and

Sandra Lee:

emotional limitations as being what I will call thought

Sandra Lee:

injuries and belief injuries, and they affect how I use my

Sandra Lee:

brain. My thoughts, beliefs, and emotions affect how I use my

Sandra Lee:

brain, and they shape what I do. And I believe thoughts, beliefs,

Sandra Lee:

and emotions also shape the tissue of the brain. Let me say

that again:

I believe thoughts, beliefs, and emotions shape the

that again:

tissue of the brain. In fact, when I'm doing intuitive sound

that again:

healing with people with physical injuries to their

that again:

brains, I am counting on their thoughts and intentions having a

that again:

very real impact on the self-healing processes of their

that again:

brains, it works.

that again:

People get better when you give the brain and the body what they

that again:

need. The brain and body heal themselves. Your human body is

that again:

miraculous. When life's kicked you down and the road seems

that again:

endless. Get back up, dust yourself off, and take another

that again:

step. The Brain Health and Healing Show celebrates us as we

that again:

receive adversity's gifts and share them with the world. If

that again:

you want to share your story of brain injury or of overcoming

that again:

adversity, I would love to hear it. I invite you to a

that again:

complimentary 10-minute share your story call. This is not a

that again:

sales call; it's an opportunity to share your experience. Go to
